GAS Demo Disc
« on: 13 Sep 2008, 02:44 pm »
Am looking for great reference demo cuts to assemble onto a CD for club members. This would be a nice tool for everyone when assessing equipment in their system and at club get to-gethers. Once we've agreed on the cuts, I'll burn them onto CD for distribution to club members. Other clubs have done this and find it useful. Post your suggestions and we can discuss. Try to limit it to maybe 5 suggestions per member. They should be very well recorded and something most everyone will enjoy (Ryan--don't post five Nine Inch Nails cuts ).

Great idea Chris.  We've talked about one before but nothing ever came to fruition.  Thanks for passing along your 2008 RMAF cd as you have chosen some great songs.

I think track 1 on the demo cd should be Dennis Bergin's Bach Toccato and Fugue, recorded by John Blaine. What do you think?

Tim,

You and I are hearing things the same on a couple of points. I also suggested the Tutti Orchestral Sampler to Chris(any track on there is awesome) while over at Scotts', and we both were thinking about the Bach, just different recordings. Cool.

After doing demos for over 10 year I find myself repeatedly going back to a core of about 10 tracks. As you said all of the tracks on the Tutti sampler are good.I'm getting a cd burner fairly soon with the intention of burning a Tims Demo Disc. I'll give you a copy once it's done.

How about an "Sea Folk" from Yellow Jackets "25th Year" Live CD, or anything from that CD!

   Have fun!

I'm like Tim--I have a long set of tracks I listen to reveal differing aspects of a system. Here are some and what I listen for:

Arturo Delmoni-Songs My Mother Taught Me--naturalness, space, depth
Bela Fleck--Cosmic Hippo--Bass, bass and more bass
Brian Bromberg-Wood--natural double bass
Doc Watson & Dave Grissom-Sweet Georgia Brown--separation between folk instruments of 2 guitars & mandolin
Fry Street Quartet-separation between instruments of string quartet
George Thorogood--Movin' On Over--recorded hot, so if you can sit through it, your system is balanced well
Contate Domino--individual voices in a large chorus in a big space
Getz & Gilberto-Girl From Ipanema--close mike male vocal
Chesky Area 31--clear dynamic orchestral with multiple hand clapping in percussion section
Cantus-Let Your Voice Be Heard--Male chorus with a very delicate width balance and individual voices
Eric Whitacre-Cloudburst--large chorus, looking for width and individual male & female voices
FIM K2HD Sampler--Flamenco--guitar with 2 dancers in the back--looking for separation between the two dancers
Alison Krauss-Forget About It--If your system is a little hot in the highs, she will sound forward & a little harsh instead of beautifully sweet

I'll add another one to my list:

Branford Marsalis "Berta Berta"  VERY dynamic track. Weird song, but very dynamic. Cool stuff.

I know you guys don't know me yet but here's a good one that surprised me.
Adele really any of her songs, my girlfriend introduced me to her.  Anyway the vocals are so dead center you can use them to make sure the speakers you are demoing are properly level matched before you begin listening.
