Fwiw, I just discovered a comment from Merlin when the Magic Mod update was done Oct. 2004. "The VSM MM is the latest generation and most sophisticated product that Merlin Music Systems has ever produced". So I think this made the VSM-M into a VSM-MM version. If I'm not mistaken, this was the benchmark prior to the current MX version.
These are really fantastic speakers as all the reviews, both industry and consumer, will attest to. Plus, the owner/designer Bobby P. provides the best support in the industry. I've had various Merlins for the past 8 years now and just making a change intending to move up to a MX model.
