Magnetic Grill Fasteners

The use of magnetic grill fasteners is a great idea. Not only does it work better than using standard plastic ball and socket grill fasters but it looks a lot better too. The best magnet to use is a neodymium cylinder type, 1/4" diameter x 1/4" long. To install the magnets, just drill matching 1/4" diameter holes in the grill frame and the front baffle board. Depth of the holes should be slightly deeper (approx. 1/16"deeper) than the length of the magnet. Squirt in a drop or two of glue (I used yellow wood glue) in each hole and tap the magnets in until until the top of the magnet is flush with the surface. There are several companies that sell neodymium cylinder magnets. The company that I purchased my magnets from was K&J Magnetics (www.kjmagnetics.com),item number D44-N52.Hope this information is helpful to those building their own speaker cabinets.

Ron, yes, the best way to do grill attachment.  I've been using 1/4" x 1/4" nickle-plated neos my self for 3 years.  I bought $40 worth and still have a bunch left.  My source was Bunting Magnetics: http://www.buntingmagnetics.com/mag-rare-neo.cfm

I love em, too. Holds like 50 of my daugters masterpieces on the fridge with (1) of them! Thanks for the sources!

Yellow glue is destined to fail, however. Physically, not designed to bond metal, whatsoever. It will tack for a while, but the forces will (ultimately) break them loose. Worse, they will likely rattle as the yellow glue hardens and begins to break free from the metal. Fun.

Silicone, CA (superglue) or poly-glue (gorilla, etc), even construction adhesive (PL, liq. nails) is the way to go. Try to scuff the magnets w/ some sandpaper to give the surface a "tooth" before gluing. I bury the mags in the grilles then wrap the grille cloth over them to prevent scratching the baffles.
