My Wavelength Brick: Fancy DAC in modest system
« on: 23 Feb 2008, 08:23 am »
Not sure if I should write fancy or expensive?! I just received my Brick DAC v2 with ASYNC mode

I came a long way from my original $300 budget since it will be used in my home office with a powered 2.1 Blue Sky monitor set up and less important than my main system DAC....we'll see!

I will give it time to break-in before giving my subjective comments. I will at some point compare my Monarchy NM24 Tube DAC to the Wavelength NOS Tube DAC....just don't hold your breath, I've busy weeks ahead.

First impressions, out of the box it has a nice full sound. More separation of instruments is apparent and the sound stage is wider/deeper. No A/B evals has been conducted, just fun listening. And it is not fair to compare this new set up (Kimber USB + Brick DAC + Audio Art RCA IC-3s) to my previous connection using internal computer DAC + RadioShack 3.5mm plug /RCA cable into the powered speakers.

Sidenote:
I have a big hurdle to overcome which is purely a computer technical riddle: in the apple mac OS, simultaneously outputting a digital audio signal via two different ports is not a standard option. So I will have to chose the port depending if I listening to the office speakers(USB) or in the living room with the main system (toslink). I'll probably mention that over in the Apple Core. (Started researching Audio Midi's Aggregate Device Editor, AU Lab, soundflower, scripts....yikes!!)

I've been using the "brick" for a year and absolutely love it.

Any update on that new Brick v2? I am very interested.

FWIW, my dealer says the differences between the v1 and v2 Brick are more apparent on Windows machines. Mine is currently undergoing surgery at Wavelength.

Gordon makes great amps.  I am sure his DACs are good too and I have been very interested in Cosecant for a long time.  The ASYNC intrigues me.  Please keep us posted on your findings.

After some break-in, totally titillating!

No hurdle at all with the right DAC or equipment

I have used the FW input on an Apogee MiniDAC to output coaxial or toslink to other DACs.  I have also used the FW input on a TC Electronics DAC to output FW, coaxial or toslink to other DACs.  Obviously each DAC in the chain has its own analog outputs.  So how many analog  chains do you need to support?  On occasion I have also used gold-plated audio Y-adapters (RCA plugs to jacks) to split my analog outputs further.  Want to have different source material playing?  No problem just add multiple computers or CD players/transports.  Each DAC typically allows you to switch between several different inputs.
