HagDAC in a Clarinet?
« on: 8 Jul 2008, 03:29 am »
Looking down the road, trying to intuit a minimalist set-up and I got to thinking... could the HagDAC be installed in a Clarinet so that one could select a digital source (though DAC) via the selector switch? Been looking at ways to maximize my Clarinet build, and this may be the masterstroke.

I pretty much listen to records exclusively, but some artists don't bother to press vinyl. Besides, my age-old CD player finally bit the dust and I'd rather just upload any CDs I have to my hard drive and use iTunes for playback.

Any problems or incompatibilities with the Clarinet/DAC coupling?

Nevermind. I can see now that the Clarinet, in addition to the difficulty of adding the components for a USB input and power supply wiring to the DAC, only has 15dB gain, whereas the the Chime has 30dB. The Clarinet may not be loud enough to incorporate a DAC. It may be easier to modify a Chime with a DAC bypass and added RCA inputs, like a DAC-equipped line-stage that can be used with lower gain phono pre-amps.

Oh well.
