Carver M-400 and CIAudio D-200
« on: 14 Jul 2008, 11:48 pm »
There's a picture of a 1980's advertisement for the Carver M-400 in a Bob Carver interview in the latest issue of The Absolute Sound magazine.
I noticed how the CIAudio D-200 is somewhat similar to the Carver M-400 in form-factor and output;
Both are rated at 200w @ 8 ohms and are similarly-sized compact cubes.  The similarities pretty much end there though!
Unfortunately, Bob didn't have nice things to say about Class-D amplifiers in the article but I've sure been happy with my D-200's!

If you're not familiar with the M-400, here's some pics:

I think the Carver could use more heatsink? Yikes!! :o

Thanks for posting the pics. Cool comparison! Times sure have changed!  The CIA is definitely audio jewelry, but the Carver looks pretty crude in outward appearance. Was WAF a non-issue back then, or was that state of the art audio jewerly of the day?

You can fry an egg on those Carvers when pushed. Used them for about a year back in the day, push them harder and you can have scrambled. You thought tubes ran hot :lol:

The D-200's are sure polar opposites of that, they're cool customers ... even when pushed hard those eggs would still be raw!   :lol:

those m400 amps were " gimmick audio" and a friend of mine blew his out    maybe because of heat
