High Eff DIY 2way options
« on: 26 Dec 2008, 02:58 pm »
I am looking to build a pair of speakers in the up coming months.  I want them to be at least 92db sensitive.  I have a budget of ~1600 that I don't think I am gonna break but may with Danny's new kit.  I am sort of interested in a real tweeter and not a full ranger but I may do a lowther OB.  Anyone know some good high eff DIY monitor designs?

See here:

There is also an extensive discussion under Industry Associates of the AC website.

You might consider the Hawthorne Silver Iris/Augie Duet designs, which would easily fit in your budget.  They are OB typically floor standing if that will fit your situation.  Lots of great support from Darrel on their forum.

The hawthorne are on my list for sure.  The are priced nice and I could add one of Danny's OB subs.

I'm with Anand.  +1 for Geddes' speakers.  You could get one of his kits, say the Abbey which I think he is currently offering (12" wg + 12" woof).  Add subs to taste.  Pretty hard, if not impossible, to beat for the price.

The Geddes kits are almost identical to what was commercially offered as AI-audio.com

the 10 inch Nathan is 93db
The 12 inch Abbey is 95db

There is a link to the different versions on the right side of the page

I like Darrel's speakers the Hawthorne Duets specifically. I had a good listen to them about 6 months ago.

But the Summas (the only Geddes speaker I've listened to), give you more dynamics and don't lose the OB openness in my honest opinion. It really shocks me that this is possible. Knowing Earl's design prowess I'm sure the Abbey's and Nathan follow suit. However, after reading Earl's theories which are backed up by measurements and having listened to the likes of John K's open baffle Nao II's, Sigfried's Orions and similar designs I feel its Earl's technologically advanced waveguides and Homeless plug that make that difference. Several others who own or have owned open baffle designs comment on this on his website, under 'recommendations.'

There is no substitute for listening to them however. Knowing me, I'll probably own both types of loudspeakers, however the Geddes design has the edge. Never before have I heard concert level performances that sounded so smooth. Most of the Lowther designs I have heard have this 'horn' coloration which is completely non-existent in Earl's designs. I've stopped looking at Lowther based designs since then. However, if you really like the 'Lowther' driver, Dick Olsher does have the BassZilla kit available as an option but it is considerably more expensive than the $1600 budget you have, as the Lowther driver is pretty expensive by itself.

My own speaker project is trying to marry Geddes' design with OB form.  It might be naive and misguided, we shall see.  Its not easy for the student to top the master.  If it doesn't work out, the same drivers will be converted into a Geddes' clone.

I recommend taking a look at what Pi Speakers has to offer  www.pispeakers.com
I built the 2-Pi Towers and they are fantastic for the money. Outstanding customer service as well.

Its interesting times.  We have more choices than ever before, or so it seems, for reasonably priced hi-efficiency speakers.

Another idea, I've considered myself is to order a Lambda TD15M, put it in a large port box tuned in the 30's and get a pair of Azura 425's and GPA 288 remakes but then you'd be on your own for xo.

It'd get you a full range speaker in the 95-97db range.  The parts would run you close to $2k all in and then you'd have to build and design yourself.   They'd be big but they'd be real hi-efficiency speakers without major bandwidth or SPL limitations, something no single driver can claim.

I'd be tempted to biamp above said system if I were to go that route and then do line level xo.  Amps could then be built with appropriate gain structures to compensate for efficiency differences between CD and woofer.
