I have gotten many emails asking about the progress of our speaker offering documented here http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=49474.msg453779#msg453779 and I am happy to say we are nearing an on-sale date in late May.  It would be sooner but I have a vacation in Europe for much of the month, and since I hand assemble and pack each pair the wait will be a bit longer

The Rapide Monitor was designed to offer reference-caliber sonics that reveal the true potential in your source and amplification.  Utilizing Accuton Ceramic woofers and the incredible Scan-Speak AirCirc tweeter they offer incredible detail retrieval and imaging matched only by speakers costing much more than their modest price.  Their sound is dynamic and spacious with an uncanny neutrality.

Crossovers were designed by Rick Craig and feature Goertz Copper Foil Inductors, Mundorf Supreme and Silver/Oil capacitors, and Mills resistors.  All of this is wired with 14 gauge wire and mounted on sorbothane dampening to minimize vibrations transferred to the crossover. They are bi-wire capable with 5-way binding posts.

Best of all they feature gorgeous automotive finishes and a unique design with tapered "channels" on the sides which remind me of the quickness of their sound. The cabinets are 1" MDF all around with internal bracing, Sonic Barrier dampening material on all interior walls, and a flared rear port. Cabinet dimensions are 17"Hx9"Wx14"D, weight is 30 pounds each.

They will be stocked in the following colors:
Brilliant White
Diamond Black Metallic
Magnetic Gray Metallic
Radiant Red

Custom colors can be ordered for an additional charge.

They are rated at 8 ohms and offer a mild load easily driven by tube amps or solid state, bass extension is -3db at 42hz.  Power handling is 150 watts and sensitivity is 85db.

Pricing is $2399 a pair!  :o

The Vigor subwoofer features a 12" alloy cone woofer in a compact 15"x17"x20" enclosure and utilizes the Dayton Audio HPSA1000-R external subwoofer amplifier which when used with the recommended EQ settings extends response to -3db at 25hz.  It is a musical sub offering taught low distortion bass geared towards music lovers, no one-note bass here!

The Vigor subwoofer will be $899

This past weekend I had the opportunity to spend a few hours with Sam Roberts, owner of Roberts Acoustics, listening to the Rapide monitors and Vigor sub woofer.

First I'd like to thank Sam for having me over. When I requested an audition I told him up front that I wasn't in the market for new speakers right now and that I just wanted to hear these. He was very generous with his time and is obviously very passionate about audio. Given the quality of the drivers, crossover parts and the XO designer (Rick Craig) they had the potential to be an exceptional speaker.

First thoughts were that these are very nice looking speakers, this applies to both the monitors and the sub. I saw the black metallic, red and white monitors and the black sub. All were very easy on the eye.

Sam's main system is all Cary gear but I have not heard any of the pieces he has before. His listening space is also well treated with GIK and ASC (?) products.

From what I heard these are very nice monitors. At first I was a little troubled by the high frequencies but the speakers were on stands that are not really tall enough. Sam mentioned he was getting some new ones as these were intended for a different speaker. After reclining the chair and getting my ears to the proper level the sound was much improved and my problem with the highs went away. Anyone purchasing these speakers really needs to get them at the right height.

The Accuton driver covers the full range up to about 2800Hz (if I remember correctly) where the Scan Speak tweeter takes over. Since the Accuton covers the bulk of the midrange the speaker had a smooth midrange without any crossover nastiness in the middle. The transition to the tweeter was very good and did not make itself apparent.

We listened primarily with the Cary amp in UltraLinear mode but at my request Sam switched it to Triode mode. I preferred the sound in Triode mode. We did most of our listening with the sub turned on but did turn it off a few times, especially when the amp was in Triode mode as it has a somewhat lower output and was thus a little bass heavy with the sub on.

In regards to the bass, it was fast and very tuneful. The F3 is listed as 42Hz and this seemed about right from what I heard. Like most monitors they have more bass if placed close to the wall but of course this isn't going to provide the best imaging. I think Sam had them set up in the right spot to afford good bass and good imaging. I did get a very nice center image and good but not great depth. Given the distance from the wall and the presence of a projection screen I suspect this limited the ability of the speakers to present depth. I imagine that in a larger space with more room behind them this would not be an issue.

A one word description for these speakers would be "fast". They seem very articulate and give the impression of having no trouble keeping up with the music. My foot was definitely tapping and the system had what I call the boogie factor. :) I think "Rapide" is a good name for these speakers as they certainly give that impression.

A quick note on the sub, I thought it tight and musical. I tend to like the bass from a sealed speaker and these didn't alter that opinion. The fact that Sam is including the Dayton sub amp with parametric EQ should make integrating these a pleasant task. The package deal of monitors and sub for $3K is very attractive especially given the quality and cost of the components that go into these.

Again, a word of thanks to Sam for letting me have a listen to these just to satisfy my curiosity.  :thumb:

Mike,

It was great to meet you and chat about your projects as well.  I am glad you enjoyed the speakers, I experimented after you left by sitting on a pillow as you are a good deal taller than me and I noticed that the highs did take on a different character.  I plan to have new stands in soon which should alleviate the problem in the future as well.

For others looking to demo the Rapides please drop me a line if you are in the Denver area, and for those farther away I am getting a pair of shipping cases ready so they can be sent for in-home demos.  I will subsidize the shipping and charge only $50 for the demo with a credit card deposit required to reserve them for a week in your home.  If you decide to purchase a pair your $50 will be credited as well.  Let me know if you are interested in this as well as I will start a list.

I just rec'vd a pair of white Rapide Monitors as Demo.

They look gorgeous.  I'm usually a wood fanatic.
I have a pair of Glossy Black SSR speakers which
I will be comparing & contrasting to the Rapides.

I have no idea how many hours are on these drivers
or on the XO parts...however, they sounded fine right
out of the box.  I've been playing them with & without
the assistance of a sub (sealed Tumult).

Rick Craig did a wonderful job once again.
Sam did a 1st rate job in spec'ing these & in their
fabrication.
