AVP-17 Bass Managment
« on: 25 Jun 2008, 08:48 am »
I am upgrading from an archaic Sony EP9ES pre/pro.  I have read the AVP-17 manual, and it appears that there is but a single crossover point for bass management of  the front, center and rear speakers (assuming that they are set to small).  Is this correct?

My front speakers, Wilson Benesch Act One, have a -3db point of 40Hz.  My rear speakers, B&W SCM8 dipoles, have a -6db point of 105Hz (specs are 105Hz - 25kHz ± 6dB).  I am running a phantom center.

Ideally, I would have liked crossover points of 60Hz for the fronts and 100Hz or 150Hz for the rears.  (On the EP9ES, I had them set at 60Hz and 120Hz respectively.)  As this does not appear possible, I assume it would be best to set the front speakers as large and the crossover point at 100Hz or 150Hz so that frequencies below that in the rear channels are redirected to the sub.

Realistically, I don't think that this is going to be much of an issue for me as my fronts do a good job till the lowest octave between 20Hz and 40Hz, and I assume that most audio mixes don't send too much below 40Hz to the fronts and centers (IOW, 20Hz to 40Hz is mostly in the LFE extension).

I currently feed both the center channel output of my pre/pro and the output of my Bel Canto DAC1 into a Mod Squad Deluxe Line Drive passive preamp.  And while I will listen to see if the AVP-17 can do as good a job as the Bel Canto/Mod squad combination, I am not expecting it to.  If it does, that would be a wonderful surprise.  aa

BTW, does the AVP-17 upsample CD digital input?

Yes, it has a single cross-over point for bass management.
The AVP-17 does not do up sampling.
