All in all you are saving $234 total and getting the best looking standard definition DVD player with unbelievable CD playback and other formats as well (SACD/HDCD/DVD/A) for $1195 shipped, plus get a free gift!

The new Oppo DV-983H utilizes the optimum Anchor Bay VRS video processing circuitry for stellar upconverting standard definition DVD playback performance. High Definition video formats (ie: HD-DVD & Blu-Ray) are not supported. Our ingeniously engineered & professionally installed modifications provide a level of reference level quality of sound and video that is just not found anywhere in the standard definition DVD marketplace today. We can confidently state that this is the best looking standard definition digital playback source we have experienced to date!

How does it sound and compare for the 2ch audio enthusiast? Comparing the ASi Modified DV-983H W/D-Clock to the stock DV-983H is pretty remarkable. The stock unit has a compressed and dynamically limited sound to it in comparison. The soundstage sounded like it was mostly trapped inside the speakers. The clarity and definition was just not there compared to the modified unit. Amusical is the term that comes to mind on the stock vs. modified DV-983H. A quick and easy A-B proves the modification makes for a real world of an improvement! This DV-983H really breathes!  How does the ASi DV-983H W/D-Clock compared to  some pretty expensive stock digital sources on hand ($2000-$9000 units)? Well, first the stock DV-983H does do a decent job against other stock units that are seriously more expensive. No doubt about it.  With the ASi DV-983H W/D-Clock  we immediately heard a greater sense of resolution, music sounded free flowing into the room with great presence and control, we had a much larger, wider, deeper soundstage, with exceptional crystal clear vividness in voices, with great separation of instruments and refinement of brushes and cymbals and great dynamics. This player is truly a dream come true for the standard definition DVD player and universal audio format enthusiast!

Note on New ASi Fully Modified DV-983H Special Group Buy orders:
Group Buy special price is now back on! Due to the overwhelming requests, we are extending the special group buy price until April 30th. This player really rocks. We have tested it this past week against some very expensive stock players and it has clarity and musicality that none could exhibit, plus killer video too! This player at this price cannot be beat!

I just ran across this.  Given that BluRay has won the format war,  I would have a very difficult time paying for expensive mods to video circuitry that is not BluRay.  What is the cost of just the mods to improve the audio part of this player?  Hopefully not the $800 full meal deal.
