I like my Tanzinites quit a bit. I thought they did quite well during  the way informal monitor comparison at the NY rave at Phil's. They are actually back in NYC as one of the guys wanted to try them in his own system. Very good speaker for the money.

I own Front Ported SSR's.

I would not describe them as fatigue producing...but they are brighter
than 'similar' 170mm 2 ways.  I have an OW1...D28...9500 & T-25
tweeters matched up to Seas--Seas---8546---8545K.  I have had Rick's RCR3 & LA1.
They pair up very nicely with Ayre, cj tubes & Elite.  Relatively easy to drive.  I don't listen
to these firing right at my ears....they sound best either crossed behind or slightly in
front of your seated position (imho) depending on your set-up.  I have them in a Cardas
set-up.

Laid back is difficult descriptor.  They image behind the Speakers.  Have good soundstage
qualities. Horns & percussive instruments seems to come forward in the soundstage a tad bit more....
but this is only after repeated A/B listening....reeds are portrayed nicely & similar to
other nice 2 ways.  Allison Krause can be a bit sibilant.

They do quite well with & without a subwoofers assistance.  However, using ACI hi-pass
filters does wonders for tubes & the SSRs. As does Paradigm, Snell or Marchand active XO.

Last night a colleague came by to listen to some Direct-to-disc records.
Tower of power was one of his older guilty pleasures & John Klemer....
He was very impressed with the SSR's.  With Tumults, they played at
stupid loud levels i.e., 90-110 dB.  However, next to these were much bigger
SP tech AV-2 ((sealed MTM with 2-8" & vifa Wave guide)) & the laws of
physics prevailed.  Upper bass/ lower midrange, what I call the 'power region'
of music was more present or impactful--dynamic.  But this is an odd match-up.

I've never had anyone describe the SSR as fatigue producing or too bright nor
has anyone asked to switch them out after an hour.  But we all hear differently.

The brightness of the sound is mostly room dependent, my SSRs sound brighter in my big room where bass is not reinforced by the room modes, and more bass heavy in my bedroom. You really need a tweeter variable (or switchable) padding resistor to be OK in all cases, something that was the norm in the 70's and 80's, but not in today's designs. Most professional monitors i heard, are brighter than the SSR's. I think the overall tonal balance chosen by Rick is accurate, and shows what these drivers can do in most rooms.

I've been listening to the SRA Rapides...these are an Accuton/Scanspeak
2 way MT designed by Rick.  They are similar to his SSR (which I own) in
that they are an easy load to drive and about the same sensitivity (altho'
the Rapides are 1-2 dB more sensitive...at least in my room with my RS SPL
meter & audio control RTA...to do accurate A/B swithces you need to adjust
gain by 1-2 dB).  I'd be curiuos to see both an impedance & phase graph.
AS well as 30-60 degrees off axis.  Many years ago I attended a seminar
at the S-Cal. Revel facilties...take home lesson was tonality off axis was
critical...in room power response.

The SSR have a more laidback Soundstage.  The tonality is a bit warmer.
And perhaps more forgiving...using these descriptors is always a slippery
slope...people tend to make moutains out of mole hills.  Both are very good
monitors.

I hope to be able to once again compare these to a pair of Tanzinites
soon.

I live in Oklahoma...hint, hint...as does the Original poster who now owns
Ricks Tanzintes & S6.
