Hellboy II

Just came back from this flick with the family (rainy day). A couple of impressions ...
1) it's definitely a big screen flick. see it in the theater if you can rather than wait for the DVD.
2) there's a 3rd one coming ... too many hints at the future for there not to be.
3) yes, there are a lot of creatures seen throughout the movie, perhaps too many, and the Pans Labyrinth style influence is definitely there in the monster design.
4) it was interesting, with a decent enough story and lots of very well done special effects. I think it would probably be doing better in the box office had there not been some serious competition from Wall-E and Batman and a few others.

I enjoyed the creature design, it was an enjoyable film as well. But something about it just didn't connect well with me, in a few weeks I could forget I ever saw it. Average digestable movie for me, could I have waited for the DVD, yeah.
But could be just me, didn't enjoy it more the The Hulk, Iron Man...I guess about the same as Indy Jones for me.

Yikes, too much of a good thing! It's an orgy of creature design and effects. Towards the end I'm thinking, "What? They haven't run out of money yet!?" It's like ten pounds of wicked stuff in a five pound bag. I was overwhelmed by the visuals and it also had none of that artsy, independent film feeling like Del Toro's other films. (I haven't seen the first Hellboy though, which was probably a bad move.) Anyway, it's like any ONE of these creatures could've just about carried another film, but in this one there's two dozen more to come. Total overdose! Pan's Labyrinth was much more conservative and thus more effective. The Pale Man is the freakiest thing on film!
I didn't actually care or feel anything for anyone in Hellboy, but it was a treat to see an entire sketchbook of monsters come to life. And that Princess broad is a treat for the eyes too. aa Not bad for a woman with cracks in her face. Her brother would make a helluva Black Metal musician.

I was hugely disappointed with this movie, mainly cuz I liked the first one so much and I was highly anticipating II's release. There were just too many corny scenes, the big one being when Hellboy and Abe Sapien(the man/fish) get drunk and their speech gets all slurred. The scene was so sappy, it made me want to bet up and take a whizz break.
Mainly because of the action scenes, I gave the overall movie a 3 out of 5 stars but from strictly an acting/storyline outlook, 2 out of 5 stars at best. I just hope the director will firm up the whole concept on Hellboy III. Guess "The Dark Knight" has me expecting more from a superhero movie than just action scenes.
Cheers,
Robin

Too many monsters and special effects, not enough plot or character development. I'd rather have a better story.

I'd agree that it was, at best, 3 of 5 stars. I thought the drunk sappy singing scene was a good break in the overdose of movie monster madness. I'm trying not to pick it to pieces though, since this kind of flick needs to be taken lightly and just enjoyed for what it is. A fun ride with a good bit of excess.

I'll be looking forward to Hellboy III if for no other reason than to see what Hellboy's baby's gonna look like.

I watched this movie with my wife yesterday .... big let down.
I've not watched batman (have tickets for IMAX this sat) .. but even then, i could see that this was a light weight movie. Visually it was great, but very sappy movie. The dialogues, the characters, just were aimed more at the "PG" crowd. There were exactly 11 people in the theater incld us
Can't wait for the dark knight!
