use tax paid

AVA's 30-day satisfaction guarantee is a wonderful thing, but it took more like 30 minutes to know that my new 240EX (looking just lovely in its compact chassis) was a keeper (replacing a Linn LK2).  I've already filled out and sent off the use tax form and check to my state's department of revenue.

I am somewhat surprised it took 30 minutes  :) .  Yep, Frank doesn't have a fancy marketing department, but his gear is very well built.  I am thankful that Frank finally is using a decorative faceplate.

Okay, I tried to do my homework, I read the ava website FAQs, I did a Google site: search for "use tax", but I'm drawing a blank as to what this means.  Sorry to be thick, but what exactly is a use tax form?  What state?

If ya live in a state with sales tax, then odds are you have a 'use tax'. It's the state's way of collecting sales tax on items bought out of state, or over the i-net where the seller doesn't have a b&m facility in the state being shipped to. It's based on the 'honor'  :o  system in most cases, though many states don't make a point of trying to inform the public about it's existence.

So technically if it becomes an issue & they can track an out of state purchase via whatever means, see that you didn't pay sales tax, and didn't send them their cut, they'll politely ask you for it.  :nono:

That's what the latest flak between Amazon & the State of Texas I believe it is was. Texas wanted Amazon to collect sales tax, Amazon said ' we ain't got no stinkin' facility in Texas, collect it yourself'.

Hope that helps.

The company I work for has to pay use tax in some states for freebies that we give customers.

As Mr. Dent noted, the "use" tax is essentially the same as the sales tax where I live in Washington State, though as of 2002 I am required to pay use tax on the shipping charges as well as on the value of the item purchased.  I find it simplest to use Amazon for most of my mail-order purchases since they, being Seattle-based, already collect sales tax from me, freeing me from having to send it in separately.

You, too, can experience the joy of paying use taxes!  Read all about it here:
