Got my ambience tweeters yesterday.
« on: 4 Jun 2008, 04:25 pm »
I ordered a set of the ambience tweeters, confident that B would create something better than my home brew ambience tweeters, using some old domes on hand, that I built as a test.
Well- I must say that I'm more than pleased. While the overall effect is somewhat similar to my own version, Bs tweeters are more extended, far cleaner and airier. They blend in with the front ribbon very well, so that the sound overall is more airy and spacious, with more top end energy, but is still highly focused and tonally correct.
So far I've used the tweeter "wide open". I've still to experiment with padding it down with the mask provided, to see if there is a better balance yet to me discovered.
These are a great bargain, and I suspect there are many front radiator speaker implementations that these would improve.
Thanks again B for advancing the bar.

jonbee - thanks for that input.  Got my order in just before the deadline in the promotional period and lookign forward to implementing them.

For me, treble is where the excitement in music lies (whether tambourine, hi hats, flute or certain piano notes)...we all cannot achieve or may even want 30 hz bass in our listening rooms...but crystal clear, extended and airy highs are a must for me to enjoy music (significant bass output down to high-40's more than enough for my needs).

Single drivers sound very pure...but very, very dull to my ears for that reason :(

About how long did it take for you to receive them?  (ditto question for Big B and John Casler)  aa

Thx, John

I ordered them Friday, got them Tuesday. Pretty quick, indeed! I'm in Seattle, though, so it's not a long way from the Bay area, where I assume they originated.

I'm 40 miles from Big B here in the Bay area...so unless they ran into production glut in the final days of the discounted offer (could happen - as that charming sales swag John Casler has a way with words ) it shouldn't be too long to me.

I think I made the PayPal payment last Thursday.

Thx - John

Just as a placement idea, I found the best location for my mains was on the back of my Lorelei's, located flush with the top. This gave me an awesome spacial effect. I also have 3 tweeters for the rear 3 loudspeakers and I haven't really settled yet. I originally planned a inner side mount for the 2 side Lorelei's but I also like them pointing straight up as I have the center rear Usher. A straight up mount really broadens the rear sound stage so I'm leaning toward leaving them there. I'll be curious to hear where you guys end up placing yours. A second opinion is always a good thing.  :D

Cheers,
Robin

Yep. My ambience tweeters are also located on the back of my speakers flush with the top.

Relegated to less space for my speakers then in my prior home...I am using crossoverless bookshelf speakers with a polydome tweeter that (mechanically) kicks in at either 5 or 7K (I believe).  My much-loved Linaeum Towers have a top mounted Linaeum di-pole tweeter....if you don't give them 2-3' minimum all around, it sounds horrible.  I don't have that ability in this house with the new set-up, so I am using my back-up pair as they are slightly slimmer and front firing.

But, I truly miss that gorgeous, spacious, open treble...and hoping VMPS Ambiance tweeters put some of that wonderful, live sounding ambiance into the sonic mix here now. It's sorely lacking now...not a terrible listen at all, I just miss that, well, AMBIANCE

Long a fan of Big B's work... :thumb:  John

Got 'em today and played them for only 30 minutes (I assume the wiring has teflon dialectric, it looks it at least, and probably needs several hours to run in entirely).  Teflon dialectric tend to take the longest (it might be the only dialectric that needs break in frankly...cotton and polyethylene seem to need no run in time) to run in.

But, it sounded dang decent in the short listen.  It seems to deliver precisely what VMPS advertises and I crave...the ambiance I'm looking for  :thumb:

More updates as I have time to listen over the next few days.

Yes, that's copper/silver wire with a Teflon dialectric, so there is some breakin time.

We check each tweeter but don't do "burnin" time on the AT's like we do on finished systems.

Thanks Brian...I've generally found that teflon dialectrics need 200 hours++ minimum in line level sources.....but less in hi level positions (maybe 25-50 is all needed).  Thickness of dialetric probably matters....but as this is 22 ga wiring, it's gotta' be quite thin.

I'm breaking them in now and they really do as advertised...add some realistic sounding ambiance to the playback.

The 'boxes' are actually larger and a bit heavier than expected and are of matte black finish that should blend with near any speaker or interior reasonably well.

Moreso than any deficiency in bass that I have here with bookshelves and 6.5" drivers in a (approximate) 1 cu. foot ported cabinet is the lack of airy, extended treble.  I don't need a subwoofer I needed better hi-frequency reproduction t enjoy music more fully.

The VMPS Ambiance Spiral tweeter seems to be delivering exactly what I had hoped they would  :thumb:

Thanks, John

Tweeter wire is 20 gauge and is the same used in all our systems with stock wiring.

John, I used masking tape first on my loudspeaker veneer before mounting the spiral tweeter.(got that idea from Big Red Machine when mounting Jim Goulding's Diffractionbegone woolies) I haven't had any issues with a tweeter falling off but by using masking tape, a few drops of superglue on the tweeter's tape would make for good insurance that they don't dislodge. :thumb:

This evening I turned the supertweeter pot to the lowest setting on my TII SE's. I realized there was a bit too much high frequency energy on some songs with three tweeters for each speaker.  Suggestions are welcomed.
