A very cool discovery!!!!

All:

A week or so ago, I was driving into the office, and I was listening to our local college station.  What's funny is that I can't get this in the house, but I can get it in the car, and it's a great station.

Anyhow, the guy played a cut that was so cool, I had to sit in the car, even though I was late for work.  ;-)  I called as soon as I got in, and found that it was of course a band I had never heard of called Desparecidos.

I did some research, and ordered the disc from their label Saddle Creek.  I'd rather order it from them than from Amazon anyway, but it was even cheaper at their site!

Anyhow. . .Just got it today.  I am 5 songs in, and I LOVE this disc.

The disc is called Read Music / Speak Spanish.  This band to me sounds like sort of a hybrid between the Cure, and the Pixies, and then even something else, which I can't put my finger on.  They have lots of their own flavor, which is really cool.

The band's fronted by a guy named Conor Oberst from Omaha.  Also in another band called Bright Eyes, this is his 5th album, and the first from Desparecidos.  Most of the band's lyrics reflect the up and coming culture of Omaha, and cities like Omaha where they still have such a small town attitude, but are big cities.  Much of his angst stems from the stifling of growth in the city, and the fact that he sees what's going on around him economically, and personally.

I really like this disc, and it sounds pretty danged good too even though I'm downstairs listening to the Sony, which still needs lots of break-in time.

Check out some of the cuts at www.fye.com, but good grief don't pay those prices!  Go to the www.saddle-creek.com site for it if you like what you hear.  Check out track 4.  That's the one that made me buy the disc.

Bright Eyes and Beulah

I love Bright Eyes, been a fav for a couple of years now.  Intelligent pop music that's slightly edgy--very nice indeed.  I just discovered a band called Beulah, a cd entitled Yoko, beautiful disc about the shortcomings of relationships and break ups, but yet hauntingly beautiful at times, and stubbornly hopeful at other times.

What other undiscovered or little known bands are out there?

Hantra,

I know the situation of waiting in the car for a song to finish, first to hear the full song, but also to find out who it is.  There's nothing more frustrating than not catching who it is, or finally realizing you'll have to wait through several more tracks in hope of hearing who it is.

A site that you'll end up using constantly is http://yes.net

Its nothing more than a few drop down boxes.  Just take note, it takes a few seconds to load up before the drop downs show up.

You enter your city.
You pick the station in that city.
You enter the time you heard the song.

It tells you who it is and the name.
And and has a direct link to buy the CD if available.

Also if you have a WAP enabled phone, you can access the site from your phone as well.

Also enjoy Bright Eyes, though I don't think I have heard the band Hantra's mentioned.  There seems to be a lot of interesting projects from members in and around that group of people.  I'll have to dig up some stuff -- there's a lot of music in the same world...

I'm glad you found Conor's side project - passionate, angry, critical -- and one of the best things about the Decaparecidos record is that he offers something - a different vision.  I teach Media Studies and I play "Manana" to my students on the first day of class and we discuss the role of criticism - not to merely tear things down, but to offer something new - a criticism of hope.  This is what flows through the disc.

Bright Eyes is excellent.  Anybod yeard Cub Country (High Unita High)?  This is my favorite art-country record and has been on my turntable often over the last 2 - 3 years.  Clem Snide is also remarkable.

not sure I will EVER use this site since I hate the commercial radio stations and the garbage they usually play. I see no independent stations, college radio, public radio at all! Looks like a VERY commercial site to me which means it won't provide what I need. Correct me if I'm wrong.
