. . which often has eg limited bandwidth, minimal dynamics, etc

Are any good DSP features or plug-ins available for Mac players
eg iTunes, Play (http://sbooth.org/Play/), Cog or other?

You need to spin some mono vinyls. You will be surprised how good those old records sound without DSP.

Mono vinyl could be ok.

Though a month ago I heard at our local audio club, Mono vinyl, then Mono vinyl that had had DSP, and most of us preferred the “treated” music.

Lots of early mono vinyl was recorded with somewhat-different phono equalization than what is used now. If you are getting into serious mono vinyl (33 and 78), you might want to invest in a vintage mono preamplifier. They will have all of the needed EQ settings to handle the "format wars" that were going on at that time. Plus great tone controls. If you want to go completely nuts, pick up a Bogen DB20 or DB130 mono integrated amp, hook up a nice old turntable with mono cartridge, add a fridge-sized speaker, and you will be in heaven.

I'd rather (or my wife would rather) that I not get another amp, but that’s interesting about the "format wars". Selectable phono equalization would be ideal for that, though a DSP could be used on other than vinyl.

(Tho' maybe I could get a Bogen in my shed?)

I see Bogens come up on ebay, but I'm in Australia, and post would be prohibitive, any other brands caome to mind
