How do you categorize your classical collection? By composer, conductor, soloist?

I don't formally categorize mine, but if I did it would be by composer, with the ensemble or soloist as an alternate categorization (gee that's hard to type!)

I have a lot of classical CDs: somewhere over two thousand. For me what works is dividing them by sub-type, i.e., orchestral, opera, chamber, and vocal. Then by composer; although not alphabetically but rather by the composer's birth date. I enjoy the sense of historical development I glean from the latter.

I've got about 600 classical cd's and I've settled on grouping them by historical time period first and then by composer within that larger historical group. Discs aren't obsessively organized. If they are a little loosely organized, I can still find what I want pretty fast.

I divide them into 3 groups: Baroque, Classical and Modern. Within each group I store them by composer.

I do the same except I separate opera out as a separate genre regardless of time period.  Like most people I lump classical and romantic eras together.  I also have a small section of medieval and Renaissance section separated.
