Yep, you'll get no deal if buying an Ekorne Stressless new, they are notoriously teritorial in their dealership and sell only retail with an occasional sales deal. My Vegas went for $1900 but with options including 2" risers for both the chair & ottoman, the Royalin leather and the laptop table jacked the price up to $2700.  Best bet for 1 of these chairs is Ebay. It's not often a Vegas shows up but there's a number of different models that do and at considerable savings. There are lower price versions of this style, including a decent one by Stanley.

A local Canadian place carries them for $599 delivered, with a choice of leather colour, and wood colour etc.

Not the equal of the Ekornes by any stretch, but affordable, and perhaps a good starter towards that style etc?

I dunno, verified ID, definitely a furniture salesman and Ekornes does a very good job of verifying their sales network but that said, Ekornes frowns on internet sales of their chairs. A quick call to their US distributor would verify their authenticity.  Better to be safe than sorry fo sure.

i have sat in the eames & ekornes chairs, & yes, they are fabulous.  no, the poangs obviously aren't as comfy.  but, if space &/or budget cannot allow you to handle one of the "big boys", you will still be plenty comfy & happy w/something like the poang.  you can rock in it, & i have dozed off plenty of times relaxing to music...

Man, I'd love to have an Eames myself, but if you're talking about audio you probably don't want that reflective leather right behind your ears.  I cut down the back of my current listening chair (a cheap Eames-ish knockoff) so that it was just at shoulder height, which helped a lot.  If you could get a hold of a dentist chair that'd be slick.  Narrow headrest, motorized adjustments...you'd be spoiled.  Not that aesthetically pleasing, though.

Funny you mention a dentist's chair, in my apartment building there is actually a dentist's office, and a while back in the trash room I saw an old dentists chair had been thrown out.  I had no idea if it worked (I don't know why they would throw it out if it did), and while I considered taking it just for fun, that thing was NOT easily lifted and besides, I don't think I could be comfortable in a chair where people had gotten their teeth operated on for years and years.  There's just something creepy about that...

Yes, the high backs of a lot of these chairs was my first hurdle point. Weird that a lot of HT chairs are so damn high-backed.  That's why the Ekornes Stressless Vegas (with adjustable headrest) was perfect; a shoulder height chair, yeah!

I'm looking for other ACer's advice on what is in my mind a critical "equipment" purchase: the listening chair.

Whatever you buy, avoid any chair that has a reflective high back. Unless you usually sit up straight with your head above the back. The best chair has a low back, or an absorbing back. I went through this recently with my leather couch, and ended up making a very thick "blanket" to cover the entire back. It doesn't look great, but the improvement in sound is undeniable.
