Mounting Tranformer in the Cornet2 question
« on: 11 Apr 2008, 02:35 pm »
Hi all,

Finalizing my Cornet2, I bolted down the transformer last night and wondered if I need to "pad" it with a rubber spacer or anything to dampen transformer hum vibration.  It seems to me that since all transformers vibrate, this may result in chassis vibration that could trigger a resonance that could affect a tube in some manner.

Any thoughts on best practice for this?  I know I am trying to isolate all of my other Audio equipment from vibration - should this also be the case for my Cornet2?

Regards, taskerc

It wouldn't hurt to put something under the mountings, like EAR isodamp or something similar, but then you will need to run a wire from it to the ground point on the chassis.

Felt or nylon pads is a good thing.  I used to build them with thick rubber washers.

Thanks BobM and Jim for your replies,

BobM, can you describe what you mean for connecting the XFR to chassis ground?  Since I am still bolting the XFR to the chasssis, will that not be enough physical ground connection?  Do you mean add a wire from the XFR case to the chassis ground?

If there's a buffer between the transformer and the chassis, like some kind of pad, then it makes sense to run an extra groundwire. The obvious choice would be to connect it to the star ground point, if possible. You may not really need this, but it can't hurt.

Good luck,
