Looking for a subwoofer
« on: 8 Apr 2008, 11:41 pm »
I am looking at either a Velodyne DLS 4000R or an Elan THP 1200 SW. I have been able to listen to the Velodyne and have read reviews on them but havent been able to hear the Elan.
Has anybody heard the Elan or read anything about it. I will be using it with B & W DM 640 with upgraded crossovers, 2 Adcom 555 II and Adcom 555 II pre amp. Any suggestions?

my suggestion?  whatever you decide on, get a pair - two subs is better than one.  even if you get two subs slightly smaller than what you might get if using only one.  if budget is the limiting factor, & you want bigger subs than you can now afford if buying two, then plan on buying a second sub as funds permit.  also, i suggest getting passive subs w/electronic x-over & outboard amp.    cross your dm 640's over at ~60-80 hz or so, & they will sound better, as well...

I just did some listening to JL Audio's F112 last weekend. It was very impressive... fast, musical and very adjustable.

That's an awesome sub!  Have heard it at a good friend's house, very impressive!

I'm not the biggest fan of Velodynes for a number of reasons. I'm extremely pleased with my ACI Force sub. I think ACI is one of those companies that is actually concerned about the quality of their product and how well it sounds. You can also talk to them directly here or by email or phone and they have a money back guarantee. At some point I will probably upgrade to a Titan in my HT and move up to stereo Force in my 2-channel rig.

If you're not opposed to building your own cabinet (though you can have one built for you as well), I would recommend a Rythmik Audio DS12 or DS15.  I finished my DS12 a month or so ago and am extremely impressed.  And I've been selling subs for 20+ years and heard many (including the JL's which are sitting in the store I work at) and the DS12 will hold it's own.

Another vote for the Rythmik subs. I had a DS12 for several months and recently replaced the aluminum cone woofer with a GR Research/Rythmik paper cone woofer (needed a smaller cab too). Either is wonderful. I hook the sub up at speaker level so the tone of the main amp/speakers follows into the sub. But have I switched main amps so can't make a true comparison, yet don't notice any difference in output or Fs depth. Great products. Will get another at some point this year for stereo.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Much appreciated. Well as much as I would love to build my own, the chances of me becoming a carpenter and actually cutting would that comes out straight is slim to none. So I am probably going to have to look for one to purchase. All of your suggestions are great and I welcome whatever input I can get. Thanks again and I am glad to be part of the circle.

Be a little careful on Velodynes if you need a low crossover point.  For some unexplainable reason, when they updated their software about a year ago or so, they changed the lowest low-pass point from 15 hz to 40 hz.  Makes them unusable if you have speakers that go much below 40hz.  This is true for the DD series, not sure of others.

The worst part is that they continue to advertize the 15 hz figure.  Really misleading.
