And I'd like to hear your modded Oppo aa

One of these days, for sure.  Shokunin and I have been meaning to get together for some electrostat headphone shootout for "some time" now also.

Anyway, my early impressions of these speakers leave me with several thoughts.

Sealed bass is good.  Very good.  Even though the official spec says minus 3dB at 65Hz, I still clearly hear 31.5Hz bass tone test (obviously much lower in level) so the rolloff is very slow.  What's even better, upper/mid bass tightness, punch, and articulation is something else.  You don't want or need subs for normal (no organ, synth bass) music.

They've done a great job with matching the resolution level and tone of drivers.  Using 4 identical drivers for mid, bass, then throwing in a superb tweeter gives the benefit of seamlessness and coherence of all frequency ranges, something mega kilobuck $$$ speakers often fail at.  You know, stuff like using ultra resolution Beryllium tweeters with slow poly mid/woofers, and so on; it just doesn't gel.

I was somewhat expecting and was afraid of thin midrange due to the narrow open baffle design, but the important midrange has just the right amount (IMO) of richness, density, and body.  Moreover, the said midrange is "bristling with life," which I cannot live without in speakers or headphones.

Those new Peerless India tweeters are wonderfully detailed yet impossibly smooth.  Soft dome tweeters have come a long way even compared to several years ago.  I'm not experiencing withdrawals even compared to my reference 5" ribbon tweeters.

The open baffle arrangement seems to fit in well even in my intimate room.  Soundfield does feel more "open" and free with excellent depth, almost Maggie style.

I love the highish 90.5 dB sensivity combined with 8 Ohm impedance.  I have sworn long ago I will never buy speakers, no matter how great, if they require monstrous and $$$$ amps to come alive.  My 30 watt VAC tube amp is not even straining to rock down the house.  (caveat.  The VAC is not your usual 30 watt tube amp, especially with those AVVT AV32B "super" 300B tubes).

The fact you can buy these speakers at $699/PAIR (in Satin Black) is well, absurd...

I heard the prototype of these in Danny R's living room and almost wet my pants.  They are an incredible speaker- and seriously made me pause in my decision to build a set of LS9's----- for a few minutes.   If the wife eventually decides that either the 9's go or she goes, only a bit reluctantly would I replace with the X-Statik's.  It would be a shame.  She's been around the house for over 30 year now and will be sorry to see her go

I didn't want to get to beat up for responded in an inappropriate way (a perceived plug) in the main circle. So I responded by posting my feelings about these speakers over in the GR Research circle.

Thanks guys.

More than a few people are probably wondering the same.  If the drivers and crossover parts are of reasonable quality, these must be a work of charity or third world sweatshop labor.  Nobody is in business merely to make friends and not money, they don’t give something away for nothing or a loss… there has to be a reason… you have to ask yourself… why?

Hi,

I popped open the external xover of my nuforce s9 speaker and the x-static uses better quality components.

I've cleaned-up the thread, and I ask that we *ALL* avoid turning this or any other thread into a platform for pushing or otherwise promoting an agenda not specifically related to audio.

The assumption is we're all grown men, capable of making up our own minds about things of a political, economic or social nature.  If and when anyone feels the need for enlightenment in those areas - or the desire to enlighten others - I strongly suggest they consider visiting forums more suited to such endeavors.

The Sports Bar is an option for some non-audio discussion, but Audio Central is not, and Audio Circle as a whole is a politics-free forum.

Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

Fair enough!  But if questions like...

"Thats an incredible price!!! How do you keep it so reasonable when you get so much. They look top notch!"

...cannot be answered.  Then perhaps they should not be asked????

Evidently all things audio do not exclusively pertain to audio and thus inherently tend to segue into other areas of concern.

I believe questions like that are best directed to and answered by the manufacturer.

Or perhaps they're rhetorical, and require no answer.

Unfortunately, we don't have a "rhetorical question" icon here at AC, so a little discernment must be employed.

Evidently all things audio do not exclusively pertain to audio and thus inherently tend to segue into other areas of concern.

Again, those aspects which "inherently tend to segue into other areas of concern" will have to be discussed elsewhere.  The subjective importance assigned to them matters not in the least, nor does the degree to which they may affect us individually.

It's a big web; finding a stump from which one can preach to the masses should not prove difficult.

That is exactly right. AV123 has a vibrant forum where this issue IS discussed.

Thanks, Bill.  I just hooked up my 5 wpc Almarro A205a MkII (with Mundorf silver/oil caps) to the X-Statiks, and there's plenty of power and volume for my tastes, while sounding great!

The VAC Renaissance 30 300B push-pull is pretty much the only unmodded piece of gear I own, partly b/c I didn't want to mess with the tuning by VAC but also b/c there is a bunch of 1 uF capacitors in there, which would cost a fortune to "upgrade" with my faves (mundorf silver/oil, silver/gold).

I'm thinking maybe Sonicap Gen I 1uF...  Any other "reasonably-priced" candidates?
