Nohr 3 for Home Theater?
« on: 17 Sep 2003, 09:39 pm »
I am just about to purchase a pair of Nohr 3's. Having just spent big $ for a Mits big screen TV and new DVD player, the wife and my checking account won't stand for much more. I have had the Energy Take 5 system for 2 years and have liked it very much. Its better for HT than music but its fine for both. Nonetheless I had a desire to get something a little different. Also we have another room that has an amp but is currently without speakers. So I thought I would take the Nohr's as my front HT speakers and use a pair of the Take 5s with the small amp. OK, none of this is exacly audiophile level stuff, but it works for us. We listen mostly to jazz and are well past our days of pumping up the volume. The Take 5s have been more than loud enough with our Denon receiver.

So my question is, will the Nohr 3's work well with a pair of Energy Take 5s in the rear and the Energy subwoofer for HT? If not, I will put the Norh's in the room with the small amp.

Opinions?

For anything HT related, I recommend the nOrh 4.0 as a starting point.

Otherwise you should be OK matching with the Energy's.

Norh has a package, 5 ceramic 4.0's for $850 delivered.  Killer deal for an HT/music setup.

I agree with Marbles.  I actually have 3 4.0s for my front and 2 3.0s for surrounds.  The 3.0s really aren't that great for surrounds.  They sound kind of anemic in caomparison with the 4.0s.  The 4.0s, however, are quite nice.

Well, I just received the pair of used 3s that I purchased. I'm no audiophile so can't describe the experience with the exactitude that some use. The 3's are clearly superior to the Take 5 satellites, but not by leaps and bounds. Certainly more mid bass and a more open, less boxy sound. Nonetheless, the take 5s still sound good for such a tiny speaker.

Of course, I was very impressed by the look of the speaker. I am an amateur guitar maker, so am very into wood. First thing I did was work a little bit on the finish, making these little guys quite beautiful.

I would certainly say that 5 of the 3's would make a very nice lower end HT system, but will perhaps consider the 4.1 in front and relegate these to surrounds.

Tweaking the Finish

I have a set of cloth-backed abrasive called Micromesh. Not really sand paper, the set has grits that go from 1500 to 12000. I started at 3600 and went all the way to 12000. Took about 5 minutes. This eliminated most finishing imperfections, smoothed the surface, and brought out a bit more shine.

I may do more in the future, but for now this served my purposes.
