Deep Hemp hum?
« on: 3 Mar 2008, 01:43 am »
Have been really enjoying the deep hemp sub, has added loads to my XRS's.

Have noticed lately an odd hum, thought for a few days it was the construction taking place out in front of my house. But tonight I realized it was in fact coming from the Deep Hemp.

I can alter the hum by playing around with the dial next to the volume, the one Louis told us to keep between 11 and 12 (I forgot what it's called), but I also think it's a grounding issue because when I touch the sub the hum goes away. I am using the speaker posts with a rather unwieldy rat's nest of wires coming out of the speaker posts of my amp and naturally have considered that this may be the source, but I also had electrical issues with the amp on the first Deep Hemp I ordered, am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

I've had ttable grounding issues in the past but am currently using a Quad 44 preamp that's totally silent. There is NO HUM coming out of my XRSs.

Stumped,

Jack

Years back I had a similar issue. The answer was to get an adaptor that terminates in a two-prong plug with a wire hanging out the side for the ground. These plugs are used to connect a 3-prong plugs to two-prong electrical outlets. Normally you attach the ground wire to the screw holding the faceplate to the wall. But in this case you DO NOT use the third wire (in fact you can cut it off).

Your sub will still be grounded because it is connected to your amp/preamp. You may in fact need to "lift" the ground on more than one component, but insure that at least one unit is connected via three-prong grounded plug to the wall (probably the power amp).

It worked for me. Kent

AH that's interesting, I had a grounding hum problem with a friends amp in my system that I couldn't get rid of. I will try "un-grounding" it, using only 2 prongs and see if that helps. My system is normally silent thanks to RWA SLA power. My TT and phono stage are mains powered though.

I also get a very faint hum from my DeepHemp as well, but I cannot hear it when music is playing (even at a very low volume).

I will try the two-pronged power adapter approach.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi,

Sometimes the hum will come upstream, from the sub and the easiest way to check is unplug the signal cables from the plate amp and them turn on the sub. This will let you know. Also when using the high level inputs a n amp with a slight hum can transfer to the plate amp.

Thanks again,
Louis

Over the last decade or so I've experienced two types of hum.

One is very low in volume, and is attributable to the transformer inside a component (obviously not a RWA Sig 30.2!). For example, my Wadia CDP has a low level hum that can be heard if you are within a yard or so of the machine. This hum is from the internal transformer.

The other hum was a ground hum noted in my post above. The ground hum was much louder, and very distracting (like you would never enjoy your music if your system has a ground hum). Kent

Hi Kent,

Thanks and the ground hum is the worst. I'm lucky to have no ground hum here at the shop.

Thanks,
Louis

Hi Louis, looks like you're busy with lots of new products and updates on existing products. I hope business is good too (you deserve it!).

Last night I dropped into a very exclusive McIntosh dealership and listened to a $250,000 all-Mac system. It sounded very impressive, so I don't want to take anything away from what I heard. But I told the very nice sales rep that after I get my listening room set up in my new house, I'd love to have him hear the RWA / Omega / Wadia combo. I think the rep will be impressed at how close my system comes in many key areas -- including resolution, imaging, soundstage and dynamics -- considering it cost approximately 4% the price.

Hi Alwayswantmore,

Thanks and it has with all the new drivers. I'm very happy with them.

Thanks and that would be great to have him over for a listen. These are great times in Audio with so many great affordable gear out there. Some are harder to find than others.

Thanks,
Louis
