pop songs' lyrics - help the Russian
« on: 10 Oct 2003, 08:10 am »
Hi,

There is one question i've wanted to know the answer to for a long time. As you can see, English is not my native tongue (its Russian).
I can understand most of written English, so when there is lyrics available with cd, its fine. But when I listen to a song e.g. on the radio, it is different - often i struggle to get the meaning of the song
BTW, speaking about Russian pop songs lyrics:
50%  of the songs use up to 10 words total (like Tatoo "they won't get us)
40% of the Russian pop songs use 10 - 50 words total
of the 10% of songs which use over 50 different words:
30% are just stupid
65% are extremely stupid
4.9 % are almost OK
0.1 % are.....almost good! (suprise!)
IMO of course

So i wondered how you, dear English speaking AC members, rate pop songs in English (lyrics i mean)?
what about such bands (popular here in Eastern Europe) as Roxette, ABBA, Chris De Burgh, Alphaville, A-HA
Does their lyrics sound stupid to you?
Any examples of good pop bands (lyrics-wise)?

Anton

Everything about A-HA suggests to the listener a Towering Work of Genius, sadly not universally recognized here.     Okay, maybe it's just me, but I love em.

Most American pop music is at least as stupid as Russian pop music.
