looking for amp for bipoles
« on: 31 Mar 2008, 10:42 pm »
Hello

I am looking for an amp for my bipoles.  I am thinking about a kingrex and just bought my first tube amp for my headphones.  I like the tube sound but it is too early to tell if I will switch to tubes (but would like some tube recommendations).  My price ranges is around 500 to 700$.  Any info would be most helpful and I would be happy to further elaborate or answer any questions.

Why don't you check this site?   http://www.glow-audio.com/glowstuff.html   their amp does five sweet watts, which should be enough for you unless your room is large.  Cheers, Hank

Hi joschmo,

I heard very good comments on both of the amps mentioned. If you go with the SS make sure to run it in 4 ohm mode. If you can find used OTL this would be pretty interesting in 16 ohm mode.

Thanks,
Louis

I also have a pair of Omega bipoles and I think that they would be best served by an amp with at least 15 watts per channel. I just think that the 4-1/2" hemps like a lot of headroom. I'm biamping my Omegas with a pair of Trends 10.1 fed by a Mapletree tube preamp. This combo works well at low to medium volume but at very high volume the amps start to overheat. I'm currently awaiting the completion of the restoration and updating of some Heathkit tube monoblocks that put out ~25w/channel. Given your price range a vintage tube amp would be nice but they are somewhat of a crap shoot unless you get one that has been rebuilt by a reputable pro.

Here's one that looks alright.

This Cary amp looks nice. Too bad its been sold.

Here's another Dynaco.

Dynaco SCA35 integrated that would probably be needed to be checked out and upgraded by a tech.

Good luck,

Hemp loves the EL84 tube. Stay within that tube in amps and you will succeed, because there is no such thing as a lousy sounding EL84 amp.

Suggestions: Jolida 102B, www.samsaudiolabs.com for rebuilds, Audio Vista, Dynakit 35

You would win large with any of these choices, which are a few, of many.
