My wave guides warped!
« on: 7 Jul 2007, 10:55 am »
They've been sitting in my home theater room, waiting for me to put them in.  Do you think I can lay them flat and pile books on them to straighten them?  Or should I just put them on the speakers to staighten?  I may have time to do so, as I'm transferring positions and actually have a week off, although I have a list of stuff to do that's several weeks long.

Maybe you should try playing some "warped" music through them in reverse phase?

A little Tom Waits perhaps...

Now, back to the topic at hand. It's kind of surprising that they warped. Were they standing vertically? I can imagine warping if something was sitting on them but not in storage.

My first set arrived on my new RM40s curled pretty severely.  They bowed out at the ends such that if you mounted the bottom half the top half was 2 -3 inches from the speaker.  Brian assured me that they left straight as an arrow and I have no reason to question that they did.  My theory is that they endured some severe temp/humidity changes enroute from CA to IL which caused this to occur.  The laminate rosewood probably grows/shrinks differently than the main structure.  Brian sent a new pair and all is well. I take care to keep the new ones in an A/C'd environment.  Perhaps a goofy idea but I wonder if one could throw them in a humid bathroom and then load them in the direction opposite of the warp so that they would dry straight??

Bob,

You might be able to straighten them to a point where you'd be able to use them. Any pics of what these waveguides look like? How are they mounted to the speaker?

Cheers

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond -- I'm on "vacation" between jobs, with a list a mile long to try to do before going back to work.  (For instance, a place is coming today to cut down 6-8 trees.  I currently have two of 16 things on my list done.  And one item on my list, "put in speakers and two boxes for network" will easily take an entire day if not two days.  Yikes!  I'll be lucky to get 8 or 10 of the items on my list completed.)

Anyway, what I've done is put books on the centers of the waveguides.  I think this might get them flat.  They were stored upright, although not perfectly straight.  I previously had them stored for quite a long time, but this is summer in CT and they are in a finished room in the "basement" (or if you're familiar with a raised ranch, the finished room in a raised ranch).  I do have a dehumidifier running down there, although it did get a bit warm, maybe mid to high 70s.  I now have both a dehumidifier and an AC unit running.  I don't think they would have warped had they been on the speakers, as they would be fixed to the speakers.

If I can get the time to put the waveguides on the speakers, I'll take pictures and/or update the status.

Actually, my waveguides have never been straight. This is something that I should ultimately bring my RM30s back in to have fixed, but the the bow is strong enough to keep the WG pins from properly seating into to the cabinets. I'm sure a strong adhesive could fix it but that sort of defeats the design.

As for climate, I'm only a short distance from the factory. I'd like to hear about any potential fixes.

Here are the pictures of the warped waveguides:

It appears I'm going to have to reorder the waveguides.

Maybe Big B could incorporate a couple carbon fiber guitar truss rods on each side of the waveguide.  That way, they could be adjusted like the bow on the neck of a guitar.  Would of course raise the price, but it might just work!

We have received several reports of waveguides warping.

I have fixed the problem by making the fasteners slightly larger so that they stay in their sockets regardless of the warpage.  You can do this to by painting the fasteners with a layer of epoxy glue, or we can send you a few fasteners treated this way.  It's tough to get the fasteners out so try some hardware store epoxy (thin layer) first.  You're not trying to glue the male fasteners into their sockets, just make them hold better.
