Speaker recs for Plinius 8150 and Leben CS600
« on: 10 Feb 2008, 03:11 pm »
Hi. I'm anchoring my living room system around Plinius 8150 and the study system around Leben CS600. I have already purchased Harbeth Super HL5, which I can use with both Plinius or Leben, as Harbeths sound great w/ both; I will decide based on the purchase of my 2nd set of speakers. So I need your opinions on my speaker options for two scenarios. I'd like to keep the cost on my 2nd speakers around or under $2K, Audiogon-price wise.

1. For the Plinius 8150 (150w/8ohms) in the living room?

Some of my candidates are:

Vandersteen 2ceII
Magnepan MMG
Totem Forest
Spendor S8e
Vienna Beethoven Baby Grand

2. For the Leben CS600 (32w/8ohms) in the study?

Audio Note AX 2 (or other models?)
Zu Druid
One of the Rega speakers

Other candidates will be appreciated, as well as your strong opinion. Thank you!

Welcome to AC, you are off to a running start with a great set of amps there!

Could you expand a bit on:

your musical preference?
room size?
what sources will you use?

Thanks,

Hi, Mark. Thanks for getting back so quickly! I listen mostly to classical, jazz, and indie rock. In classical music - my favorite genre - I like the solo piano music & concertos, as well as bigger orchestral pieces, early music like Monteverdi and Tallis as well as contemporary composers like Steve Reich, Stockhausen and Golijov... so basically runs the gamut of the tonal palette. Jazz, I like bop and these days, Michael Brecker, Maria Schneider, Guillermo Klein, Tord Gustavsen, the usual suspects. Rock, I'm a huge Radiohead and Joy Division fan, and I also like a lot of the more adventurous smart electro artists like LCD Soundsystem and Ricardo Villalobos.

My living room is about 20' x 30' and my study is about 13' x 17'? These are just guesses. What makes it harder is that I have to move in May; I should have probably built my systems later, but just couldn't wait!

I have Cambridge Audio 840C and I also run Squeezebox 3 through its DAC. I also have an old Sony Playstation 1 SCPH-1001. I am eventually going to go into vinyl soon. For some odd reason, I already purchased a cartridge: Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood MM b/c I don't want to go LOMC until I get everything set up & I'm comfortable with everything. (If you can recommend some great turntables for my system - I'll be running vinyl through Leben - I'd appreciate it, too! I was looking at Kuzma Stabi S and some Nottinghams. I'd love to restore a Garrard as a project but that's way out of my league...)

Thanks again, Mark!
