Stay away from this movie.

A few friends took me to this movie and it was horrible. It put me in a bad mood.

There was one scene at the beginning that was decent as far as sound goes, the rest sucked. Visually some of it was a little too fruity without being full on musical show fruity. There is never ending deaths in it that are unpleasant. It was cut short in a lot of ways from the original play/musical/broadway so it is a total disappointment in a lot of ways as well.

Bad movie. I tried to laugh some, tried to enjoy it artistically, or even from a broadway/musical/drama geek perspective, all failed. It is not even worth renting. I would not even pirate it for free. This is the most I will do, warn others that it sucks.

As someone who has seen 3 differents productions of Sweeny Todd onstage (my wife has seen 6) all I can say is that we thought it was great. Hellena Bonham Carter was GREAT! Her 'By the Sea' was an absolute hoot.
While Johnny Depp isn't a trained singer, his rocker approach came accross very well.
Tim Burton's vision of Victorian England was spot on, dark with great cinematography and editing.
A great adaptation of the stage version.  :thumb:
But iff'n you don't like the stage version, chances are you wouldn't like the film.

My wife and I recently saw Sweeny Todd and we both liked it.  While it is very violent, the production is well done and the singing was better than I thought it would be.  I agree with Occam and thought that Hellena Bonham Carter really stole the show and was excellent.

I think this would make a very good rental when it eventually comes out.

I could probably appreciate the stage version even not liking it.

I did like Johnny Depp's approach at singing.

I would agree for the most part it looked like what that era should have. The eye make up was over the top, which would be great if only the rest of the characters had some sort of bedazzlement but they all lacked it but the other Barber.

Regardless the movie was awful. I just see no real value in it.

I hated Moulin Rouge though as well, techno in old France? Also Nicole Kidman can not sing. Her voice was grafted over the lead sound engineer's voice because it was all unusable. Modern musicals just seem to suck.

DOS, you seem to be in the minority.  I was totally entranced by Sweeney Todd.  Carter should have gotten a Supporting Actress nomination, and the cinematography was extremely well done.  I highly recommend it.
