Jeopardy: Jazz category Q's missed

Earlier this week, Jeopardy featured Jazz as a category, but the contestants did poorly.
They got questions on Billie Holiday (this lady sings the blues)
Ella Fitzgerald (Memorex: Is it Live or is it Memorex?)
but missed three of the 5 questions.
One was "This trumpeteer , known for "Cotton Candy," gave Wynton Marsalis his first trumpet in New Orleans"   (*)Contestants all gave wrong answers.

Second was "This saxophonist for the Dave Brubeck Group went on to win some award."  (***) Contestants had that deer in headlights look.

Third question I can't remember.

I THOUGHT jazz was in high regard amongst the intelligent people who would appear on Jeopardy, but may be I was wrong.
BTW, the answers were Al Hirt (*) and Paul Desmond (**).

I THOUGHT that Brubeck was wildly popular amongst even non-jazz listeners, so the fact that no-one knew Desmond really surprised me.
Maybe I knew Al Hirt's "Cotton Candy" because my mother played that record alot when I was a kid.
