Bryston BP4---should I send for repair or sell?
« on: 12 Jan 2008, 07:06 pm »
Hello,

I have a BP4 preamplifier (out of warranty).

The right channel of the AUX input will cut in and out intermittently.  After a little experimenting, it seems that only with Monster cables (950i, 850i, and 550i) does the intermittent contact/connection occur.  With cheap, generic dollar store cable, the connection is fine.  With a lower-end Tributaries cable the connection is fine as well.  I will guess that having a larger RCA connector (such as what the previously mentioned Monsters have), something is happening with the right AUX input.  This problem isn't occurring on any of the other inputs.

My question is whether I should sell this preamp or send it in for repairs.  I'm curious about costs, of course.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

If all the other cables seem to work, then the problem is probably the Monster cable, not your preamp. Why not just keep using cables that do not seem to cause a problem? You may have stepped on the Monster cables causing strands to break up inside, or pulled the jacks out in a way that damaged their internal connection, or something like that, and thus they are making intermittent contact. If you like the preamp when it isn't "acting up" with the Monster cables, you might want to try another cable of different brand but equal or better quality to the Monsters to see if that one works OK before going to the trouble of sending off your preamp for evaluation and repair or getting rid of it.

I would take Burke's advice.  If I had your problem I would ditch the Monster Cable and keep the preamp.

Just my two cents,

John.

Are you thinking my cables are more of the problem?

Easy to determine if it's the actual cable that is intermittent by moving the suspect to another location and wiggle it around. Do some testing..

Michael,

You can always e-mail Bryston and check on the cost of a repair.  I doubt it would cost much if it is only a loss conection.

Best,

John

John,

Yes, I think that's what I'll do.  A repair certainly wouldn't be as much as a new Bryston preamp, though part of me is looking for an excuse to get a BP 6.
