Steve, any opinion on SSD drives?

On other forums folks have posted that SSD drives sound markedly better.

Do you have a perspective on this?

Hey I am no computer guru but disk vibration does has impact on throughput as shown in this video.

This is an exaggeration of what would happen in a music server but Solid State Drives (SSD), with no moving parts, would be impacted much less, if at all, by environmental/ambient vibration. It's hard to argue that extra vibrations are good for music.

Not even remotely kidding.

Folks that are very highly respected are posting that SSD drives sound materially better.  There's quite a bit of debate about "why" but little about "whether."  Leading hypothesis is that there's sonic gains from the significantly lower processor overhead, confirmed by measurements of lower processor load.

When it comes to using USB or direct Toslink out of a computer, things like disk accesses can make a difference in jitter.  It modulates the power supply after all.  If you are using USB to an Off-Ramp or an Overdrive, this can potentially help.  Maybe even as much as an expensive USB cable helps.

Pace-Car is another story.  The jitter incoming to a Pace-Car is not important, so it probably will not make any difference.  I am using a Tascam US-144 right now into my Pace-Car 2 to get USB interface.  I tried several USB cables, including very expensive short ones.  No audible difference.  This is what I expect with the Pace-Car 2.

I have a Black Rock™ that I got down the street. I put it on top of my computer and music sounds just.. better. Try it!

Snake Oil..

Let me say that I work in an area where we have SSD's, early before the public sees them and have done extensive testing. Unfortunately I can not reveal confidential business data.

SSD are neat , but as far as I have witnessed in testing in labs...

Spend you dollars elsewhere for sonic perfection...

I cant tell you how many 'hundreds' of hours I have played with these SSD's...

Bring $$$$$$

 :duh:

But hey if you think its better and have the bucks go for it!!

Its your money!

If you will read my post again you will see that I said it can "potentially help".  It depends on a lot of factors, like the PC and PC power supply design.  It's like USB ports.  Even on the same computer, different ones usually behave differently, even Macbook.

Just because you didnt experience any difference does not rule out someone else experiencing a difference.  I have read a lot of anecdotal evidence also.
