Got an iPad Nano for Xmas - now what?
« on: 20 Dec 2007, 07:37 pm »
Ok, I'll admit I'm behind the times but I got this 8 gb iPod and I need to figure out what to do with it.  I've loaded a few CDs on to it in Apple lossless format for lack of knowing what would be best.  I realize that format takes up more storage in the iPod.  Is there a format option that would be for all practical purposes just as good?  I'll be up grading the earphones soon but I will only use this thing with earphones or through my car system.

My second question is about iTunes.  What is AAC format?  It is a compressed format I understand, but does it sound decent compared to a redbook CD?  My worry is that the file can't be burned to a CD to be played elsewhere, like in my car.  So why would I want to buy music in that AAC format?  Would I be better off buying the CD and loading it onto my HD then converting to whatever format for the iPod?

Sorry if these questions seem elementary but this is my first foray into music files other than those on disc.

AAC is a compressed format like mp3

with lossless the files take up more room and on hdd players you get less battery life as the DAP has to access the hdd more frequently.  On flash DAPs the difference will be minimal.

to get the best sound rip your music with EAC.  a popular choice is LAME encoded mp3's as they are a good balance between size and quality.  Choose V0 when you set it up... just follow a guide like this one:
