Hi, folks.

Just really messed up my tripath amp (Teac AG-L800 receiver)!  While installing a new toslink cable, one of the gold-plated speaker plugs moved over and touched a gold-plated RCA jack - then POP (not too loud, but loud enough for me to notice) and the unit turned off and there was the faint smell of fried circuitry.

Now, the unit comes on for a few seconds, and then flashes "PROTECT" before powering itself down.  I unplugged, tried to reset the unit (as per manual instructions), but no beans.

Hopefully the speakers aren't damaged (sweet Onix xls).  Any thoughts or advice?

Advice?  Always, ALWAYS, turn off all equipment when changing any interconnects, cables, anything.  I'm sure your not the first and won't be the last . I sympathize with your mistake and hope an easy solution is at hand .
So much can go wrong when any components are powered up.
Another Golden Rule; Always be of sober mind when working on anything electrical.
