Just got this e-mail from a local Long Island theatre (IMAC):

IMAC Survey!
Please tell us what you think...
Would you come to see the NEW YORK DOLLS on a very special pre-New Years Eve performance the weekend of December 29th or 30th, 2006?  The New York Dolls created punk rock before there was a term for it.  They created a new form of hard rock that presaged both punk rock and heavy metal.  Their performances influenced a generation of musicians in New York and London, who all went on to form punk bands.  The band features original members David Johansen (aka Buster Poindexter, his lounge-singing alter-ego from the 80's) and Syl Sylvain.

Ticket prices would be $45.00/$34.00 members.

e-mail your response, if you're in the NY, LI area: michael@imactheater.org

.....So would I.....

I check Google once in awhile....."The Harlots of 42nd. Street".
Came across this....don't know who wrote it....but I agree.

"THE HARLOTS of 42nd STREET

'Cool Dude & Foxy Lady/Spray Paint Bandit' was their sole single on Sunburst Records in 1974, allthough they did record a bunch of other songs that never got released,...........recently in an interview ( aug '05 ) DAVID JOHANSEN said these guys were the DOLLS biggest competition in the early 70s N.y. scene, they wore makeup on their face and played more or less in the DOLLS style of glam, they did play on the same bill sometimes as the DOLLS, MAGIC TRAMPS and others, one show in '74 the Tramps, and the Harlots played with 2 other bands called CANON, and STREET PUNKS, we now have a gallery in our gateway 5 with these smaller bands + LUGER....

' COOL DUDE AND FOXY LADY/SPRAY PAINT BANDIT ' ' 74

released on the sunburst label, this is a BRILLIANT single and should have been a HIT, perhaps it was a minor anthem ? but one you' ve never heard except in your dreams.....begins with high hat, and melodic guitar, it's pop-rock with the trashy aspects of glam and the band plays like you figured they'd sound,......... trashy,...........it has charming aspects that would appeal to both fans of glam and pop, catchy chorus.......very good lyrics too,

'.........ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE LAND OF R-n-R, THERE LIVED A BOY AND GIRL WHO LOVED TO LOSE CONTROL, THEY USED TO HANG OUT EVERY NIGHT AND DAY, AT PLACES AROUND N.y. WHERE THEY COULD HAVE THEIR WAY.......( chrous ).......HE's A COOL DUDE AND SHE's A FOXY LADY WHOA A WHOA........THEY HITCHHIKED TO A CLUB THAT WAS UNDERGROUND......................SHE's A COOL DUDE AND HE's A FOXY LADY WHOA A WHOA.................................( later )..............COOL DUDE AND FOXY LADY HAD MADE THEIR CLAIM TO FAME..................HE's A COOL DUDE AND SHE's A FOXY LADY'..........

'SPRAY PAINT BANDIT' on the b-side the band goes for a more or less straight ahead rocker with emphasis on bass and guitar, ..........' I'M A SPRAY PAINT BANDIT, AND I' M HEADIN' TOWARDS YOUR SUBWAY, I' M A SPRAY PAINT BANDIT AND NO ONE GETS IN MY WAY, I' M GONNA WRITE MY NAME ALL OVER YOUR WALLS, IN LETTERS BRIGHT AND TALL, AND WHEN YOU SEE YOUR SUBWAY TRAIN IT's NOT GONNA LOOK THE SAME AT ALL.................................... ....( later ).................IN LETTERS RED, WHITE, AND BLUE'.............

musically we give this band the thumbs up, allthough their music does not seem to be as strong as the DOLLS, but good comparisons can be found nonetheless, bet as a live band though they were something else.............so where are these live recordings of The Harlots of 42nd st. ? "

8)... ...BRILLIANT single ....I like that part........allthough their music does not seem to be as strong as the DOLLS...I would dispute that. It's too bad when you get stuck with lousy management....kind of screws up the works. :?

Well Phil...the answer. Back in the 70's we did a show at NYU. It was filmed by a Professor there...Michael Luckman (sp)....for a class he was doing on music. About a one hour performance....opening act was Sniper, with then lead singer Joey Ramone (before the Ramone's were formed.....he called himself Jeff Starship at that time). I never really got to see the film....and I don't know where it is now.... :?
Who knows....might just turn up someday....

Is this the guy?

http://www.paraview.com/luckman/index.htm
Sure looks like it Phil.....because that was what the show was about....
"Luckman taught the nation's first college-level course on rock music and the youth culture at New York's New School for Social Research in 1971. Hundreds of colleges and universities have since added rock music to their curricula. His freewheeling Underground Tonight Show live on cable television in New York City paved the way for television programs like Saturday Night Live."
But this part seems a little strange..... :o
"Michael C. Luckman, author of Alien Rock : The Rock 'n' Roll Extraterrestrial Connection, is director of the New York Center for Extraterrestrial Research and founder of the Cosmic Majority, an organization that seeks to advance the views of the majority of people living on planet Earth who believe in UFOs, the paranormal, the New Age, and the sanctity of the environment."

Maybe a little...."off the wall".....

Chris,

I actually contacted him this afternoon and have traded a couple of emails.  He might still have the footage, although has no knowledge of what condition its in or even exactly where it is in his "vault".  He says he would charge a fee to look for it, and we could have it in whatever condition its in if he finds it....

How much would the fee be?  I'd be in for a little...

I'd love to help too!  Tapes from the 40's and 50's are routinely restored, guess it would really depend on the conditions it was stored under.  Though he did say "vault"  8)

He's talking about $1000 or so (he said "at least", but I'm pretty sure we can make $1000 stick)...and he's not even guaranteeing that he'd be able to find it or what condition it might be in.  And keep in mind that this was shot on 1/2" film...we'd probably have to get it restored and transfered to video to actually see it, and this would cost money as well.

With all that in mind, maybe we can take up a collection here on AC?  I'm more than happy to "buy a lottery ticket" for the chance to see Chris rocking in his glory days.... :guitar:

Would hate to give the guy $1000 just to look. Not much incentive to to look very hard if the price is the same for him to look in the closet from his desk or get up and do a more physical  search a $250 look $1000 find would be more to my liking then all we would have to do would be to get everyone who have had a picture taken with lonewolfny42 leaning on there speakers to throw in $2 we would have it all covered :thumb:
