Which GR's for a 7.1 setup...
« on: 25 Dec 2007, 04:23 pm »
Hi all! My first post here!

Any ways, I have an Onkyo 805 and I want to do a 7.1 setup. I have been reading the forum and I just ant to make sure I buy the right kits. I will be watching movies or listening to music so the speakers will need to do both well.

My room is about 18'Dx14'Wx9'H and the center would be best mounted above the screen.

I was thinking of three A/V-3S for the LCR and four A/V-1RS for the side and rear surrounds. I'll have a powered sub to go below 80Hz --or whatever it needs to be. I am just wondering if maybe going for two A/V-3's for the LR and the A/V-3S for just the center. I just keep bouncing back and forth between floor standing for the LR and having all three the same for LCR and mounting them up all higher for a better sound field for everyone on the sectional. AUGH!!

Thanks in advance.

I had the AV/3 and was very impressed with what the speaker could do for just over $300. Go for AV/3 as fronts, you cannot go wrong with it. The bass is shockingly good!
Include the new subwoofer that danny will be offering soon, and you'll have a kick-ass setup.

Hi eb

I am more home theater than music so I thought I would give you what would be best for HT. The music side is easier as you just go with the best kit you can afford for the LR. The AV3 suggested above would be a very good choice. That leaves the center and surrounds. For the center use the AV3S if you go with the AV3, that will allow more flexible mounting options, it can be closer to the wall or in a cabinet without affecting things too much. For you surrounds I offer the following suggestions:

Try to get surrounds that can go below 80hz, making it easier to cross to a sub and make the sound seamless. Out of Danny's speakers the best surround speakers in order of suitability IMO are AVO3, AVO, AV1-RS. Which get used where are more dependant on your room size and WAF.

IMHO you are better off with a 5.1 system using 2 AV03's as surrounds than a 7.1 system using 4 AV1-RS's. Your room is not that large so the benefit will not be that great from a 7.1 system. The major benefit of the AV1-RS is WAF, but it has a higher crossover point.

Hope that helps.

Maybe this will help.

Discounts on packages  :thumb:  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=13407.msg115139#msg115139

Even with the rising cost of Copper I have still honored those prices.

A couple of things to note. Your room is not very large and a 5.1 system my be fine. Also aim for keeping your sub woofer crossover point to 40Hz or so and integration will be much better.

I have the package 6 and the sub.  At first I was thinking about the A/V-3s for LR like you but then I heard a speaker with a transmission line in a store and I was really surprised by the quality of bass.  So I decided that I wanted a transmission line and went for the A/V-3, what a good decision that was.  I listen to a lot of music and the A/V-3 are great.  Maybe for movies the A/V-3s as LR would be fine but I would not be surprise if for music you will be more satisfied with the transmission line.
