GIRL NEWBIE
« on: 20 Dec 2007, 04:51 pm »
Hi there!

I am looking for some recommendations on solid used equipment.
I am new to all of this and I would love to begin building a quality system to REALLY enjoy my records.
I currently have a technics turntable...but am in the market for a used receiver (integrated, to start off with) and some speakers...
my budget is between $500-$550...any ideas??

thanks!  :D

Speaker recommendations are tough as they are so personal but   if you could find some of Danny's AV series of speakers on A'gon, it'd be a great starting point!  Here's his site link... http://www.gr-research.com/

For a superb receiver in your price range, I'd look for a NAD 7240 PE.This includes a phono and tuner. I've seen them on Audiogon or EBay for about $210-230. Excellent sound and quality for the money. If you're interested, I know of a good friend who might be interested in parting with his.

Just gave my old NAD 7155 to a good friend for her system. I bought it new in March of '85, and used it for 8 hours every day in my shop until a year ago, and still sounds great. A terrific starter receiver and much better than most. As with any receiver the phono section is just OK, so if you want to spin a lot of records think about a separate phono pre-amp down the road.

I would say yes, buy it if the price is right.

Jesoi,

I sent you a PM about the used NAD 7240 PE receiver. This was the successor model to the one you are looking at, and more powerful I believe. Even though it is rated at a modest 40 watts, it has a short-burst peak power auxiliary power cuircuit (Power Envelope ) that allows it to perform at a much more powerful level, performing more like an amp of double the rated power. A great value. I have happily used the NAD 7240PE since I bought it new in 1986 as my starter amp and can't bear to part with it.
