RAV-6 Review at RAW Acoustics Forum
« on: 11 Dec 2007, 01:42 am »
Danny designed the crossover and I designed the cabinet for Al Wooley's RAV-6 two-way speakers that utilize Danny's M-165X woofer and Al's RA104.5 custom Arum Cantus ribbon tweeter.  A local Austin member of the Lone Star Bottlhead chapter heard them at a recent Austin Bottlehead meet, and asked to come to my house to give them a serious listen/review in a quiet environment.  I've never had a "reviewer" do his thing here, so I said what the heck.  David came over a few days ago and we talked quite a lot about music, its reproduction and room influences, etc etc.  About three hours later, David left, thanking me for my time, which was fine with me - a new experience.  An honest opinion-filled review is now on Al's RAW forum:   http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=48328.new#new  It is not filled with audiophool adjective-laden gushes - just honest opinions.  Refreshing.

I had my 5-year-old Sherwood Newcastle CD980 20-bit CD player in place, so that was spinning the CD's.  Yesterday evening I replaced it with my new 24-bit/192kHz tube output HDCD player, so I'll have to get David back over for a listen.

David commented very positively on the woof/tweet integration, so that kudo belongs solely to Danny!
Maybe Al will be convinced to put the RAV-6 kit back up for sale now.

Hank,
I was impressed with those speakers when you brought them to the meet at my house and I think David was as well(obviously, he remembered and pursued them). Since returning from his visit with you he has spoken highly of your speakers/equipment/setup. As an FYI, recently David wrote a review of the Epos 12.2 monitor speakers, I believe stereomojo picked it up.  :thumb:

Thanks John, I'll check it out.  I't nice to know a local, objective reviewer who has no hidden agenda.  David just flat enjoys auditioning speakers.  I've never met anyone who does that just to get personal exposure to as many speakers as possible and then share his impressions.  He is apparently not a Fan Boy of any manufacturer/designer, which is so refreshing.  Anyway, Danny hasn't commented, as this one design hasn't gotten the attention that his OB's and LS's have  and that's fine - he is VERY busy these days.  Al is too, for several reasons.

Now that I have a good redbook CD player in my system, I'd like for you to bring over some of your gold IC's and show me the difference in sound they can make.  Warning:  I am a skeptic when it comes to IC, speaker cable and power cord sound differences.  The one thing I do believe in is accurate 75 ohm IC impedence - that's why I build my IC's with Canare true 75 ohm RCA's (no, I don't sell them for audio).

Merry Christmas if we don't talk before - I'm gonna be busy - all day rehearsal Saturday, concert Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at LBJ High School (you guys come if you can).  Getting ready to play an invitational concert in Chicago on the 22nd!
