I'm a non-techie too. I am using the Musical Fidelity tube buffer between my dac and Sig 30 and really like what it does to the sound (smoother, without loss of detail, fuller sound stage). A tube buffer does two things: 1) adds a bit of tube flavor to the signal path, and 2) impedance matches by showing a high impedance to the source and a low impedance to the amp. I don't know why this is a good thing, but apparently it is. I don't know if it's the tubes or the impedance matching that is improving my sound, maybe it's both.
I'm trying the Promitheus tube buffer, because it adds either 6 or 12 dB (the Musical fidelity doesn't add any gain), and it has gotten great reviews. In my system, I think a bit of gain would be a good thing, since I don't have highly sensitive speakers hooked to the Sig 30.
I hope that helps. May someone more knowledgeable than me can weigh in.
