I'm eagerly waiting till Macworld in mid January before upgrading my old G3 Mac

My 12" Powerbook G4's logic board died recently, and I replaced it with a Macbook.  I don't like the Macbook's chicklet keyboard.  I'm hoping Apple comes out with another sub-notebook laptop in January, or else I will probably sell my new Macbook and get a Macbook Pro with a real keyboard.  I think the chicklet keyboard was a bad design choice.

I tried Leopard, but its X11 is hopelessly broken, so I'm sticking with Tiger.  Most normal people don't use X11, but I do, and I need a version that works.

I miss my 12" Powerbook G4.  It was a great machine.  I'm a little annoyed that the logic board went kaput after only 3 years.

Sorry to hear about the G4.  Can get it fixed?

It wasn't worth the effort to replace the logic board, so I chopped it up and parted it out on eBay.

Hey!

Ouch! See this make me worry about my almost 4 years old now 12" PowerBook G4  :?

So far so good. The only problem I had in the past was when the HDD died late last year.  :( But I managed to put in a new HDD (Toshiba "Travelstars") in it and it works flawlessly since.... but better keep my fingers cross with these thing right? Well, luckily I backed up pretty every thing so I didn't loose any important data.

Take care,

Dang, my PB G4 12" is running like a fighting champ, scratches and all for the past 2 years.  One of the last G4s built.  Apple for sure makes decent machines, as long as there are no latent defects on them.  I am waiting for Apple to make a super laptop or a more updated MacMini and I will consider upgrading...but I can see myself using the G4 for another 3 years, np, as long as the logic board does not fail or something.  I carry mines to work everyday.   :thumb:

Mac is the only way to go. I switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro. I rip all my music to AIFF files on an external 750GB firewire 800 drive. It is almost full, so I'll add another one and daisy-chain them together since the MacBook Pro only has only FW800 port.

There are some serious concerns about iTunes after the 7.5 upgrade. I have some details on my site at http://www.computeraudiophile.com/node/22

I am currently using iTunes 7.5 build 19 in both my MacBook pro and my PCs and no issues.  :thumb:

thanks for that heads up CA!

I found that OS x 7.5 has a CD playback bug as well which may or may not be associated what was written about in stereophile. Essentially using a G5, during playback of Redbook Audio CDs (commercial) iTunes will freeze after ther second song. Though it will rip a CD without any problems. This is documented in the support forums at Apple.com

I've never seen a bug like this before in iTunes. I really want to uninstall it but don't want downtime and rarely use the G5 for CD playback.

And I wanted to be so positive in my Who uses Mac post. I will post something later with pics. up until now its been a joy!

Definitely a clear case of isolated incident(s).  Sorry to hear both of you are having issues 7.5 .  I would downgrade to previous iTunes software version 7.x.  As I stated earlier, NO ISSUES HERE.  :thumb:

Hi Levi,
Wish it were a case of "isolated incidents." I have iTunes 7.5 on 2 different G5 dual PPC systems (work and home). Both exhibit the same problem. While my macbook pro duo running itunes 7.4 does not behave the same way for CD playback. Others on the apple.com forum describe exactly the same CD issue with the same timing, etc.

Here one of many threads related to issues with v7.5: Problem Playing CDs in iTunes 7.5  http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1225880&tstart=0  There is a fix but it forces you to disable the Error Correction mode for playback. I always use ErrorC since I rip all my CDs (AIFF) to my external drive.

Hello Ed,

Could this be a problem with the old G4 or G5?  I have a MacBook Pro and a PC with iTunes 7.5 and there are no problem playing CDs or ripping them with error correction on or not.

Another thing that boggles me is If this is Global problem, then everyone should be experiencing your issues right?

Hmmm...
