Stereo Larger Subwoofers...
« on: 30 Oct 2007, 04:34 am »
Getting into this hobby... about 7 years ago...

Highly influenced by my Dad, who had at the time dual M&K MX125 subwoofers...

Ran into a mono LFE signal though -- was just one of the things to bring about my interest...

Such large boxes and drivers, shaking a room....

Just so happens, one of those M&K subs was my first subwoofer ---

As time went on, I learned that they sucked, very inaccurate and diluted.... but the Push Pull design was very interesting. Granted, I don't think it was implemented very well ---

Anyways, of course, SVS has been huge the past few years, I jumped on that band wagon in blind faith. For HT is answered, and for music - it did just the same, jumping in accuracy far above the M&K...

It was until I jumped into higher resolution components and gained a little better budget did I start to branch my wings....

After much conversing with my audio enthusiast buddies throughout the states....

Several subwoofer manufactures popped up from all sources

Martin Logan, VMPS, REL, SVS and Velodyne...

I've always been a fan of BIG subwoofers, so ML, REL, and Velo pretty much were totally disqualified from day one.....

However SVS and VMPS were definitely at a tie...

Obviously, since I am here - VMPS won...

With low compliance drivers, a sealed, heavy duty, inert enclosure, and a push pull configuration...

The Larger Subwoofer has gotta be one of the most accurate, textured, and full sounding subwoofers I've ever heard...

It is a testament to their ability at how seamlessly I have been able to blend them in my small room...

They don't have quite the extention I thought they did -- so I crossed them over at 20hz to prevent the ocasional bottoming out...

But for music, they delivered... I had a audio pal come over a week or so ago, and he constantly asked if the subs were on... again, just quick, smooth, textured, very easy to blend in - even in my small room...

I will probally get a SVS for movies down the road, but VMPS is definitely here to stay with the music portion...

Definitely recomend the Larger subwoofer --- and the kit is very fun to put together...

Great story, which sounds surprisingly familiar.

I posted recently of a client of mine who went through the same (almost exact) steps, and ended up with a Crown Amp and a LARGER, and is now saving for his second LARGER, because he wants to run stereo.

He did try a couple "highly regarded" competing brands and sent them back and is now in LARGER-ville, and finding out that "BASS has detail too". :thumb:

And while on that subject, I also recently had a "died in the wool" Magnaplanar owner who had loads of trouble trying various "high priced" subs and could not get them to integrate with his Maggies.

He added a single LARGER with an NHT X-2 crossover, and is happy as a clam :green:

How does the Larger differ from the 215 in terms of sound quality and extension? Just trying to get a sense of the difference the extra 12" active driver in the Larger makes.

You have good ear. It the accuracy and speed of these subs is excellent and much much better than a huge portion of subs out there.  I'm glad to see a Maggie owner used a VMPS sub. If you have planar, stats or ribbons you're not going to get anywhere near this bass accuracy for anywhere near the money that I'm aware of. When you have the transient response of planars etc you don't want a blurry sounding sub at all.

You are obviously brighter than most being able to discern the quality of low bass well. Bass is of major importance to me and getting superior accuracy can be done with these subs. That quality isn't common and I don't think the majority of people have heard that quality or have been able to discern it. VMPS subs get no advertising and aren't flavor of the month, just solid engineering for 30 years. With VMPS speakers the bass you can rely on to be at least excellent. If it's not then your position and/or room can be blamed assuming you don't have the putty way out of range.

I proof read this and sound like an advertisement. Being as I've owned VMPS for 11 years it's obviously what I believe cause it's true.

Hi Early,

I thought B had answered you on this one.

The 215 has a similar output to the LARGER with the restirctions you mention.

It will not play quite as high into the upper frequencies (the LARGER is good for 250hz) nor quite as low (the LARGER can hit the upper teens)

And because it is a "single" 15" the total output is down just slightly due to fewer square inches of cone surface.

For most applications this is a moot point, until you get to the outer levels of performance, or need to have the SUB cover a higher frequency range like using it with Maggies, Quads, Martin Logan, etc.
