Modwright/Sony 9100ES owner review
« on: 15 Nov 2007, 09:57 pm »
As posted on Audio Asylum recently by me:

I've been part of this hobby for 40 years now. I adopted digital players in the mid '80s, and went through many permutations of single box/2 box/3 box players. I've owned many of the well regarded mid-priced audiophile digital front ends, and tried many different connection options, cables, anti-jitter and re-clocking devices. While my main interest has always been speakers, I never found a digital solution that sounded quite right to me.
I bought a Modwright Signature Truth Sony 999ES 4 years ago, and the digital merry go round stopped. I found a digital source that was detailed and dynamic, with stunning bass impact, yet totally natural and as comfortable to listen to as a pair of favorite old shoes. A very neat trick.
This is not a review of the 999. Those interested should read the series of reviews written on the Modwright players in Positive Feedback by Bob Levi. I can add that his views on the player, and the sound of each improvement echo my own down the line.
While my 999 was working fine for me, in anticipation of retirement I've been configuring my 3 systems for the long term, and I decided to restart the clock on my front end. My satisfaction with the 999 was such that I never considered anything other than Dan Wright's designs. I pondered his newest baby, a very cool tubed wireless transporter for a pc based music server, but decided I would probably be spinning discs for another 10 years at least, so I bought a Sony 9100 from Dan.
I'm very pleased with the outcome.
First, I plugged the tube regulated 9.0 PS into my 999, which had the choke regulated 9.0 PS. It was an immediate improvement. Midbass in particular was tighter and better defined, and the overall focus was improved. For those with modwright players not using the tube regulation, I would seriously recommend having the ps upgraded. The bang for the buck sonically is well worth it.
I then switched the players themselves, and found the overall presentation to be clearer, better defined, and somewhat drier overall. The 999 sounds more "romantic" and warmer, but much less focused. The 9100 is more literally accurate from top to bottom. Some may well prefer the sound of the 999, but I love the cleaner sonic window. The extra detail is provided without giving up the Modwright signature naturalness.
FOr those with older modwright players, I'd say the the PS upgrade provided about half the improvement over the 999 with the choke regulated PS, so that the biggest cost/benefit improvement is a PS upgrade.
Once aqain, Dan has stepped up the quality of digital playback. After 30 hours of listening, I know I've found my front end for the next decade or so. I think it is a classic, if any digital front end can be so named.

Dan,
Does the new Modwright Transporter perform as well sonically as the Sony Modwright 9100 that Jonbee is reviewing?
Thanks,
Bill

Does the Transporter perform as well as the Sony reviewed above?  YES!

I will let Ted Brady post his opinions on the Transporter Thread, as he owns two of our modified players and has done the comparison.  He recently emailed me with his opinions, but I will let him share them.

In a word, YES, the Transporter offers Reference ModWright digital playback AND gives you HUGE flexibility with regards to the whole computer streaming technology which address jitter (basically eliminates it) and offers HUGE convenience options.

The Transporter actually uses a tube stage that is even more advanced than that used in the 9100ES, borrowing from technology developed from the LS 36.5 balanced LS.  The transporter offers RCA and truly balanced (XLR) outputs.

The Sony 9100ES is our very best CD/SACD/DVD player and completes at levels 3x plus its price.

The Transporter offers different options and conveniences, specifically with regards to computer-based Redbook audio.  It won't play SACD's and doesn't do video, like the Sony does, so they are different animals, but they BOTH offer Reference grade audio playback.  It really depends on what your needs are.

Thank you for the review jonbee and I hope that this answers your questions mr_bill.

Take care,

Dan W.

Dan,
Have you worked with the Modwright Transporter direct to amp, no preamp, using the XLR balanced outputs?
This is a consideration for me as I would run the Modwright Transporter straight to my mono amps, but I prefer running balanced and don't know how the xlr output with Trans. volume control would work.  If running volume level in lower part of range, then resolution and dynamics are lost as I understand.  I guess there are jumpers inside for the rca outputs to adjust volume range, but not for the xlr's.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
My comments about the Transporter and Dan's other players I own (or have owned) is over on the Transporter thread, but it's only a couple statements so far..  I've not heard the 9100 but assume it to be slightly better than the 999ES or the 3910 I own since it's a more recent mod topology.  All I can say is that the Transporter sounds better than the the 999ES and 3910.  Where?  In detail retrieval no.1!  In resolving microdetail and subtle cues; in layering of soundstage.  I assume the combination of a better DAC chip (AKM) and a newer Modwright tube stage design is the reason.  The classic Modwright tubed house sound of lush but not velvety, warm but not bloated, continues with his newest tube stage.  And you get a SPDIF input that makes the TP a Modwright 24/96 tube DAC too.   The cool bottle (5U4) sticking out the top is nice, too. :D

I've not tried going around the pre (Modwright LS 36.5.....getting feeling I like Dan's stuff?) to go straight into my balanced amp (McCormack DNA-500...Dan doesn't make an amp.......yet ) mainly because I need the pre for other sources...but I also mirror your concerns that low volume listening via the digital volume control is effectively lopping off bits.  Oh, and Dan's mods make the jumper option no longer available.
