Denon DVD-3910 universal player not reading CDR's ?
« on: 12 Sep 2007, 06:41 pm »
Not certain if this is the correct forum or not (?)...

Interested to see if anyone can provide some troubleshooting advice.  I have a Denon DVD-3910 that reads all disc formats except home brew CD-R's.  The Denon originally read all silver discs and only developed this cdr issue over the past +/-6 months.  The Denon is about 2 years old.  It is also a modified unit and unfortunately not a warranty candidate

When attempting to load a cdr disc, the display will read "LOADING" for ~ 5 to 10 seconds, then stops and displays 00:00.  I have tried the remote play buttons and FF/next track buttons to initiate play and on a very rare occasion it will start playing the cdr.  I typically use EAC to back up and burn my cdr's at 2x or 4x speed with TDK blanks.  I just burned a new cdr using Nero to see if it may be the burning software.  It's apparently not as it still fails to read the cdr.

I have heard of others replacing the laser assemblies but that was usually a result of the 3910 not reading the more difficult SACD hybrids or DVD-A's.  My unit reads those fine.  I also downloaded the lastest flash memory and updated it to no effect.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ken

I have a Denon 2900 that is a bit older than your machine...I bought mine in 2003. It still puts out a fantastic picture, but I can't get it to play any CDR discs, and it seems to be having trouble reading a newer DVD from time to time. I put in a film called 'Civic Duty' the other day, and I couldn't get it to read anything on it. It would just act like it was trying to see what was there, then it gave up and said something like, "No Play".  The disc played fine on my brother's cheapo player.

Whenever I've had this problem it's been that the disc was burned "track at once" instead of "disc at once".  I don't know the difference in what the player sees, but this was always it.

I suspect it may be your laser going out.  I did discouver that my issue was actually the CDR blank brand that was causing problems.  I typically use tdk but discovered once I switched over to maxell/phillip/verbatum, that the Denon would read those with out issue.  Some one suggested trying a different burning software - ie change from EAC (burn) to NERO.  It made no difference as long as I was using the TDK blanks.

Before going for the laser replacement route, I suggest you try reflashing the firmware in the unit.  Sometimes that resolves a number of issues.  Go to the Denon website and find out more there.

Best regards.

Ken, thanks for the info. I'm picking up an HD-DVD player in the next few days, so I've been planning to put my 2900 out to pasture for a while now. Actually, it'll still be in my system, but relegated to music-only duties.

It's been a great little player for me, though....it's seen a LOT of duty over the past four years.
