Display problem on RWA Squeezebox 3 after lightning strike

Hi all,

I have 2 SB's, one standard SB2 and one RWA modded SB3. The SB3 has developed a problem with the display after a recent lightning strike that also took out my DSL modem and some other small parts.

The problem is that a horizonal band across the center of the display stays dark. This obviously makes the display hard to read. One funny thing is that after having the SB3 off for a few weeks, the display functioned again when powered but returned to the old state after a few minutes.

Before pursuing a repair with Slimdevices or RWA, I would like to check if this is something I could attempt to fix myself. I am in Europe so just shipping back and forth is a hassle and somewhat costly.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks for helping!

HI all,

After reading MGalusha's great story on recasing an SB, I got inspired  :? to at least have a go at repairing this problem myself.

Opened up my SB 3 and found that some of the solder connections to the display seemed a bit "dry" to my lay eyes. What I mean is that there seemed to be very little solder in the connection, not a properly flowed blob.

First try: resoldering these connections. That seemed to work for about 5 minutes (at least I didn't kill it!). After that, same problem with the band disappearing in the middle of the display.

It seems that there is some component involved in making the display work that is susceptible to use (heat?) that causes the display to not work in this way.......

Any ideas on what I could try next?
