How much beating can the amps take?
« on: 21 Sep 2007, 11:38 am »
Like jrgeoffrion I am amazed about the level of customer service given here.

I am worried that I accidentally have damaged my amps – 7B SST. I like to listen at high volume – 95db and more in peaks. Last weekend I damage my skaaning midrange (Flexunits 5 H ) – after long term listing session 3-4 hours. I heard no kind of distortion – but smoke came out of the speakers – I immediately shout down the amps.

Before this – both chassis was only luke warm on moderate levels – now one chassis is significantly warmer then the other channel.

Please help :)
Can my local dealer look at this
Do I need too send them back

Have too say that I cant hear any thing – It seems ok, but I am worried about the warmer chassis!

Hi Baard,

The chassis will operate at different temperatures because each amplifier has it's 'bias' adjusted independently for best performance. If the amplifier is running hot to the touch then it may need to be looked at.

My guess is you just overpowered your speakers which would not affect the amplifiers.

Not likely the dealer can adjust the bias settings. Where are you located?

Remember if he made the midranges smoke driver damage could have occured such that it could damage an amplifier. Brystons being built like brick shithouses (compliment) as they are will go into protection or blow fuses and survive fine. But that burnt voice coil could drastically change the load impedance the amp sees. Some coils heat(burn up) up so much that they short out. (zero ohms) A simple DCR check of the speakers is in order at the least.
