SOLD: Manley Snapper monoblock tube amplifiers
« on: 30 Jun 2007, 05:59 am »
For sale are my Manley Snapper tube monoblocks wired for US 120V power.  These are overbuilt, powerful, musical tube amplifiers with excellent company support.

For pictures, see http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=gallery

These particular amplifiers are unusual in that they can be switched to drive the EL34's in either Ultralinear (100+ watts RMS) or triode (around 50 watts) mode.  This option is only available by custom request and extra cost, and very few Snappers have it.  The amps are powerful enough that you may find, like me, that triode mode sacrifices nothing from the bass while adding a richness to the sound that is hard to resist.

The casework and hardware are faultless, with top-line WBT binding posts and both XLR and RCA inputs.  The back panel is even beveled to ease in the routing of stiff audiophile speaker cables.

One of the best convenience features of the Snappers is the ability to individually bias the power tubes, which allows single tubes to be replaced instead of matched pairs or quads, as many other tube amps require.

After some tube rolling, I stumbled on a great combination of NOS Telefunken 12AT7 input tubes, NOS Tung-Sol cryo 5687 driver tubes, and Electroharmonix EL34 power tubes, all of which come with the amps.

All the tubes are in great shape.  The input and driver tubes are virtually new.  I would guesstimate 500 hours on the driver tubes; they are completely stable and have not required rebiasing in a number of months.  I am the second owner and have used the amps 3-4 hours a week during 12 months of ownership.  The Snappers have been functionally flawless and required no servicing.

Overall, I would rate the condition of these amps a conservative 8.5/10, for age and a single flaw - a small split in the plastic on one of the power supply capacitors.  See the gallery picture - it's not very noticeable and has absolutely no impact on sonics.

The amps will be shipped with the original boxes and manuals.  I will include a couple of ceramic fuses.  The power tubes will be wrapped individually and placed in a safe place in the box.

PM with any questions, and if you would like to the gallery pics in higher resolution, please include an email address.  I will also be happy to take any specific shots or angles that you desire, as I have not yet packed up the amps for shipment.

I have perfect feedback on both eBay (fly*ride) and AudiogoN (tl1000sv).  You will be happy with the condition and performance of these amps.

For AudioCircle members only, I've dropped the price to $2700 + shipping from US zip 95621.  I accept PayPal if you pay the 3% fee, otherwise please use a Money Order, or Cashier's Check from a major bank.

Thanks!  Tim

I have these amps, but without the triode switch option. They are great amps. Clear, neutral, fast, powerful into difficult load, extremely dynamic, incredible soundstaging and space. Custom output transformers for low impedence speakers and GT tubes make it the most powerful sounding EL34 amp youre likely to hear. 450kohm input Z makes them very easy to drive even without a preamp, like with a SB. After 500 hours (must be some teflon in there?) the tone of acoustic instruments like violin, woodwinds and brass became neutral and spooky real. This amp is worthy of your best source and cables. I put GroverS in front and JPS SC3 behind them and it doubled "the amp's" performance. I use the stock tubes except for JJ input. I tried JJ KT77s but not as good as the stockers here. The amp was designed around the GTs (same amp and tube designer Mitch Margolis) and IMO they are perfect in this amp. Individual bias per tube reduces crossover distortion, bias is easy from top mounted contacts. Parts quality and finish are excellent.

The only drawback is that the dynamics and clarity have made the flaws in the room acoustics much more apparent. I have finally learned to turn down the volume to avoid this, but the amps will likely cause the owner to desire upgrading other components in the system to keep up with the amps.  :)

$2700 is close to dealer cost for a new pair without the mod. I don't know this guy tl1000sv, but recognize a good deal and I wanna promote the Snapper. I am proud to be a Manley customer. So far, in my experience they have done everything right. Design, build, targeting the product, sales support, tech support, warrantee support, even EveAnna answering my pestering stupid questions before I even bought. This is rare in high end audio. I am proud to own these Manleys. I you want 100+wpc tube power on a budget, these may pleasantly surprise you.
