Using iMod with a mini mixer?
« on: 2 Sep 2007, 10:56 am »
Hi guys.

I was wondering if it's possible to connect the iMod's line-out with a 2 or 3 channel mini mixer? Here are a couple I am considering:

*Rolls MX22 Mini Mix*

*Rolls MX56c   MiniMix A/V Mixer*

I notice under the MX22 Specifications, it says the following:

Quote
# Channel 1 Max Gain: 32 dB

# Channel 2 Max Gain: 20 dB

# CH1 Input Impedance: 10 Ohms

# CHI Input Impedance: 20K Ohms

# Output Impedance:50 Ohms

Not sure what these figures mean, but do you suspect that I'll have any problems with headphone volume output? I'd like it to be somewhat loud but not deafening.

Now I know what you're thinking.....why do I want one of these when I can get a dedicated mini headphone amp...right? Well the reason is because I plan to connect my Xbox 360 to the mixer as well, so I can hear the sound effects from racing games, like the tire screeching and engine noise from Ridge Racer 6, for example :)

Please let me know.

Either of those two should work but you will need to go directly into the hi impedance input.  However, if you also want to mix in the signal from the xbox, then you will need the larger of the two with more inputs as you cannot use the low impedance input on the smaller one for either the xbox or line out of the iMod.  It looks as if you will have to use the 3.5mm input and the stereo RCA input on the larger mixer to do what you want to do.

You may also want to take a look at the Xenyx series of mini mixers from Behringer -- extremely nice for the money, but not sure if any models have two high impedance inputs.

HTH,

Isamu,

I believe so, but you should call a distributor first just to make sure the high level inputs are ok to use with the output of your xbox -- I'm sure they will be, but you may need an adaptor of some kind or a different cable.

These are really great littlee mixers -- the older UB series were very nice, and these are just that much better in terms of sound quality.

No better deal anywhere.

Hi isamu,

I have no experience with using the iMod with any kind of mixer, but with the modded line out signal, I do not recommend connecting to an input of impedance lower than 1k.  For best results, you probably want to go 5k or higher.

If you are using the stock headphone out, you might be able to drive the 10-ohm input, but that might be a tad low and you might get some bass rolloff as the stock caps in the iPod are *probably* only large enough to work with loads of around 32-ohms and higher.

Best regards,

Vinnie

Vinnie,

The tape inputs on these mixers are typically 10 k or greater, so that's where he should be plugging in the iMod.  The mic inputs are typically 1.5k or less, and the remaining TRS stereo inputs are also typically about 10k -- but he'll need a cable with a 1/4" TRS on one end, and a pair of RCAs on the other to connect to the xbox (assuming the xbox has RCA outs.)

Other than that, I think it's pretty straightforward as the tape inputs are typically the same as any audio preamp.
