I read an article in the Sydney Morning Herald today a about how keen people were to disassemble them and see what's inside. (And post videos on youtube or photos on the web.) Apparently someone used a hammer and a nail. It was a matter of urgency

And a nice profit on each....

"Each 8GB iPhone sold by Apple Inc. puts $333 more in the till than the device cost to build, a market research company said today after tearing apart the new phone.

El Segundo, Calif.-based iSuppli Corp. calculated the bill of materials and manufacturing costs of the $599 8GB iPhone as $263.83, giving Apple a profit margin of nearly 56% on the device. The tear-down analysis only spells out what's inside the iPhone, component prices and estimated cost to make; it doesn't take into account research and development or marketing costs."

Got mine yesterday...easy to use..easy to surf the web..I browsed AC at the store on their demo phone.

My email is set up on it as well.

Not very easy to type, you have to one finger "hunt and peck", but it can be done.

I needed the email/phone/browser functions at my cabin which has no electricity.

This is a VERY cool device.

An interesting thought...  Ipod was not the first mp3 player, far from it, they just brought the easiest to use package to the personal mp3 player world.  Iphone was not the first smart phone, again it looks like they are bringing the ease of use to multimedia oriented smart phones.

I think the next big thing could be Apple tackling the car convergence device...take a GPS/maps director, a mobile phone, an mp3 player for the car with large storage capabilities and maybe even internet, sat tv/radio options and put a killer UI on it that is safe to use while driving (obviously TV/internet for passengers only) and you could have another huge hit.  It wouldn't be anything new, as you have all those pieces already, but do you have them altogether with a simple and safe UI?  There is a market there methinks.

Josh, I think what Apple was attempting with the Iphone is to integrate all the technological possibilities that are available a la carte but to put it on a "menu" or "special of the day" form in the Iphone.  For sure there are soooo many things a smart phone can be for people, but to be all might be next to impossible with the available technology.  The closest that comes to it, I believe is a sort of micro portable computer....but then, the form and the coolness factor disappears somewhat.  And, if people are grumbling because the Iphone cost an arm and a leg, would they be willing to dish out more than that with more features?

The biggest impediment when it comes to spending money on expensive phones or smart ones for that matter, is that they face a very rough environment being handled daily with all the possible falls etc...
