Available SongTower (honey locust) *SOLD*
« on: 7 Aug 2007, 02:28 pm »
Yesterday we packed a beautiful new pair of honey locust SongTower QWT's and had them ready for shipping.

This morning we received an email from the customer.  It turns out that unforseen personal issues will prevent him from taking delivery of the speakers.  I told him I would sell them for him.  Before I post them for sale on audiogon, I thought I'd just mention it here in case anyone would like a pair immediately.

Here is a photo:

They are packed and ready to go.

Hey Jim, I thought it would be a little more appropriate to post a question here instead of starting another thread..

I just have two quick questions..

1. Will there be possible upgrades for the ST's in the near future/future?

2. Approximately how long until we see a matching center for this speaker? Before the end of the year or sometime 2008?

Would you recommend the "Black Hole" for these speakers?

Thanks,

-Nick

Well, I'm listening to the SongCenter as I type--it sounds like a go to me, but of course Jim will have to build it and approve. If I haven't messed up, It shouldn't take long to get it on the market.

How do these speakers differ in tone from the HT2/3 series?  Do they give up some resolution for an easier or  warmer sound, are they as "immediate" or "real" sounding in the midrange, is it only the restricted bass response that mainly spells the difference, etc?

I realize I could do a search and find the price of a new pair of these speakers but it would be easier if you would just post the price.

Thanks,

Well, I wouldn't describe the ST's as "warm."  And compared with other speakers in their price range, I'm pretty sure they will sound more immediate and "real."  But I'm not sure how most people would rate them when compared directly with the HT series.  The ST's mids are smaller, which makes for better detail and focus.   But the HT's W18 is known for its detail.  I suspect different people will take away different opinions.  In any event, the main difference is in bass extension.

I don't know, off hand, what upgrades would make sense for ST's.  I suppose Sonicaps (or similar) upgrades to the crossovers and Cardas (or similar) binding posts might be worth investigating and we would certainly not be opposed to producing versions with these.  Other options might include your choice of veneers/woods, although the cost increase would be significant since we lose the economy of scale we obtain by mass-producing standard finishes.

But we will gladly work with anyone who might want these.

As Dennis indicated, he is already finished with the crossover design and I have the schematics.  So it is just a matter of building another cabinet and testing them.  I would say we will have that done in the next three weeks or so.

The surround design is already finished and we will be building a pair of these as well.

As for the subs, I have the drivers and will begin building them in the next week or so.

Although I don't think it would hurt, I don't know that I would necessarily recommend it.  Although I have not built a pair with it and A/B'd them with a standard pair, my gut reaction is that it wouldn't really make that much difference.  I doubt that cabinet vibration is as much of an issue with a transmission line cabinet.

With a sealed or normal ported cabinet, there is significant pressure built up by the back wave of the driver.  The transmission line cabinet is much more free-flowing.  So there is much less internal sound to be killed by damping materials.  That is one reason the midrange seems so clean.  There is not as much sound bouncing around inside the cabinet and hitting the back side of the midwoofers.

I am in the process of writing a comparison with the HT1's.  I hope to have it ready soon.  Jim Salk says that the HT1's and HT3's sound the same from 100 hz up and I agree.

In any event, the main difference is in bass extension.

Although they both sound "Live", and have great midranges,  they sound very different to me.  The SongTowers are top quality, from the normal speaker point of view.  With the ribbon tweeter, the HT1's are in a different universe from mere mortal speakers.  The SongTowers are like you are at a live concert and the HT1's sound like you are in a recording studio in the same room as the musicians.
