Teflon Caps????
« on: 15 Jul 2007, 10:55 pm »
Hi Everyone

I was wondering if anyone has tried the new supposed teflon "wonder caps" that I have read about in numerous other circles such as Aksa and Dave Ellis.

I can't afford such things but I'd still be interested to hear of anyone's experience in using them in either the Clarinet or Cornet.  The cost of equipping a Cornet with these caps would be ridiculous but then again there may be some wealthy people out there who have done so!

Cheers

hi wondercaps do their wonderful work but you can try for yourself as Sonicap generation I is very affordable. it is rare that you should buy >1uF for a coupling cap

Just to second Kyrill's comment, with Sonicap Gen I (or, for more money but much less than Teflon, try  Mundorf Silver/Oil) you can get some idea of the potential for improvement.  IME, in some cases botique caps make a huge difference and in others the improvement is modest/very hard to hear.  If you hear a notable improvement with Sonicap Gen I it is probably worth going for even more clarity and smoothness someday with Sonicap Platinum or V-caps.

In a few cases Sonicap Gen I has sounded a bit harsh and I have escalated to Mundorf Silver/Oil.  The Mundorfs have (in the few cases I've used them) not sounded harsh.

I'm using Sonicap Gen I on the input to my Aspen GK-1 preamp.  Many have posted that Sonicap Platinums work well there and someday I will try them; right now the sound is good enough (using the much lower cost Gen I caps) that I am not highly motivated to solder in the more expensive caps.

Good luck,
Peter

My Cornet built by Wayne at Bolder sounds quite nice with Jensen Copper Foil Paper in Oil with a small value Sonicap Platinum cap.  The VH Teflons are supposed to be very nice and big dough.  I have Mundorf silver/oil caps in my speaker XOs and they are just great.  Have not heard them in high voltage applications.

I have Sonicap Gen 1, Sonicap Platinum, and Mundorf Silver/Oil in my Cornet2. I never did a stock build so can't comment on the difference, but no complaints on the sound. I can only compare the Cornet2 to a Bottlehead Seduction with Auricaps, which isn't a comparison at all, the Seduction is completely outclassed. The Cornet2 also cost more than twice as much in parts than I spent on the Bottlehead.

The Bottlehead Seduction is a big step up from the phono inputs in the receivers I have owned, and the phono section in an Adcom preamp, but the Cornet2 is at a higher level of refinement.

You are welcome to stop by for a listen if you are in the Tucson area.
