PMC OB1 bass
« on: 2 Aug 2007, 02:01 am »
Hi, I would like to ask owners of these speakers about the bass these produce. I just can't see a 7 inch driver producing a lot of bass. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Opinions, please. Thank you.

They are great, bass is strong and deep. I'm using 4BSST.

But the position in the room is very important, toe-in especially.
Mine sounds best without any toe-in. Also damping on the first reflections is necessary because they are so resolute. It can easily get sibilant with the wall reflections or toe-in when the tweeter is firing at you, maybe it's my room in that regard but anyway the point is they are great in every regard once you set them up properly.

Hey Dave,

I have OB1s (the ones that John mentioned... http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/63736-pmc_ob1s_in_natural_oak/) and yes they will produce outstanding
bass from a relatively small driver and cabinet.

nuhl is correct about positioning, I also have mine sitting with little to no toe in.

I am driving mine with a 14B and I find no lack of bass and with the transmission line design the bass is smooooth with a very gentle roll off.

As for size, does it really matter...
I have hade a pair of Klipsch La Scalas in my house for a while and the PMC 7" woofer kills the 15" woofer in the Klipsch.

Find a pair to listen to, I am sure you will be  impressed.

 8) Thank you for all of your replies. What would you say the bass goes down to? As advertised, or slightly less?

Hpower: Wow, a 14B? So the speaker can handle that kind of power? That's impressive.

I will definitely audition these...I wish I had the $$$ for the EB1!

Dave,

Ya a 14b... I guess size does matter

With the Bryston and the OB1's, my room gives up long before either the amp or the speakers.

Just the other day I was playing a Bill Frisell cd and as with all Bill's recordings, they are recorded so well that
I find myself with the volume  sneaking up much higher that I normally would.
Anyways, I started hearing some odd sounds... the speakers where not over loaded, the 14b was no where near clipping
(I have never heard it clip)... it was actually things in the house starting to make noises.

Trust me, the OB1's can play!

If money was not an issue (and it is, hence the sale of my OB1s) I would love to have a pair of EB1s.
The IB1s are nice (the OB1s probably play lower) but now that the EB1s are here, who would want the IB1s when you can
have the same great speaker in a full floor standing cabinet.

I just have the 4BSST...and the BP6 preamp.

That's impressive.

I would love to have the EB1 too!

Hopefully, they'll be on active display at CES...
